I say, if an artist wants to do it and the fans want to pay the money, let capitalism prevail.

A more interesting question is, who would you pay the most money to meet and spend five minutes with? How much would that be worth to you?

Myself, I'd like to talk to Mark Mothersbaugh, ask him what happened between Devo and doing the music for Rugrats. I'd give him $250 for the privilege of asking him face-to-face.

If you are a member of their fan club, you can enter a lottery along with other members and get the chance to meet them backstage (as the band would be there for days talking to fans if everyone could meet them). They've been doing this for many years, and I've seen videos of it, and the lucky few seems to be in heaven every time. 😁 Metallica themselves breaks even or makes a slight loss (at least when I was a member, some 10-11 years ago) with the fan club thing, by the way, so it's not as if they're being greedy, quite the opposite.

Pearl Jam has Club Ten. Members get first crack at the best seats at discounted prices, as well as other perks.

Pearl Jam has also survived for over 20 years, a lot of it on the strength of their fans. Their fans are treated very well by the band, and the same goes the other way.

If a band wanted to charge me money to meet the members, I'd not pay it. I'd rather not meet the band members at all than have to pay for the "privelege". They are people, just like we are. You show me someone who thinks they deserve to charge a fee for their fans to meet them, and I'll show you a stuck up asshole who doesn't deserve the fame that fell into their laps.

Actually in japan meeting with the band are often used as incentives to buy the artists CD. The marketing companies include redeemable coupons for meetings with the band (usually they are only brief photo op meetings though) or other swag in the CD cases. Sometimes they include different rewards for different issues of the same album so its not uncommon for people who are really into the band to buy multiple copies of the same album. Right now i think that its only the bigger bands who are doing it but as I understand its becoming more widespread.

Western labels should really start to look to the east for ideas on how to expand the music industry. I honestly think the reason that Japan is now the biggest music market is because of the incredible marketing and packaging of Japanese releases.

I'm on the fence about this. On one hand, it's exploitative. On the other, it does give there fans an opportunity they might not have otherwise. Not to mention there are plenty of musicians who can actually use the money.

Sean Moore gave me a proper "What you looking at?" face once and then with what seemed like the flick of a switch understand my situation and became amiable. So yeah meccalecca, awe can get in the way. 🤣 Plus no one charged me.

People pay money to see the artists backstage or something. You buy the ticket same way you'll get the one for the show. Very high prices I may add. 😲 You'll have to desire to see them greatly if you were to go through with it.

If the music artist is famous, do you think it is fine for them to charge fans money to meet them? After all, some fans really do want to meet them.

I know it sounds silly but if someone who is extremely famous, then he/she shouldn't charge fans money to meet them...the reason is that they have enough money anyway. If they are so extremely famous then they probably don't want to meet 1000+ fans backstage anyway.

But if someone is less famous and hasn't got that much money (for example a band who just released a debut album/who are on their first tour and they don't know if they'll have money for the next recording session, tour etc. but they are relatively well-known already), then it's OK I would say.

If I had the money for it, and if I could meet one of my idols then I would pay for it.
That's capitalism for ya. I personally would never pay to meet someone like that. It's clear these artists are exploiting their fame and fans for monetary gain. But for some fans it could be a really important moment in their life to meet someone they idolize.

I've been lucky enough to talk to quite a few artists I really admire. most of the time, if you're in awe of someone, that conversation can be extremely awkward.
