I think it's hard to judge a decade you haven't lived through, since we're only really being exposed to the decade's best or worst, not living through the hype of a much-anticipated release only to be sorely dissapointed.

I can't really say much about my experience in the 80s cause I was only three when the decade ended, although I remember seeing my first film in the theater in 1988 (gawd Im old), Blue Planet.

The 90s in retrospect were definitely the smart-allecky decade of cinema, where even the blockbusters had a definite tounge-in-cheek, post-modern feel to them. It was probably the last decade where you saw a wealth of live-action family films and where the summer movie season wasn't completely dominated by superhero flicks and sequels, so there's definitely some nostalgia to be had there. It was also a great decade for expanding the audience to the talented fringe filmmakers who previously would've had a hard time finding an audience beyond festival-goers and the big-city arthouse crowd.

The 2000s were a less easily definiable decade. Yes the franchises ruled, perhaps unfortunately, though there too was a continued push to expand the access to all types of filmmaking, so as always cinema moved forward, though less so in the mainstream than in previous decades. I think perhaps what may have dimmed Cinema's infleuence in popular culture is the rise of the Serial drama, as it seemed like the most acclaimed and invovative work being filmed was being shown on premium cable, not in the theaters. Still, the 2000s had a lot of small gems, even if slightly less cultural "phenomenons" than decades past.

The 2010s are still too early to judge, but there seems to be a lot of similar trends still prominent. Franchises still rule, TV seems to be sucking away a lot of the top filmmaking talent, and there seems to be a focus on finding films in non-traditional markets (ie the internet) rather than in the theaters. I haven't seen enough 2010 films really to give a wide-ranging personal assessment of how it's gone so far, but like the previous decade it seems to be more focused on finding the small gems through multiple channels rather than a focus on the type of big-event picture.

So I donno what I would call the best decade. Every decade since the 20s has a major favorite, so really there isn't much of a need to rank them, at least personally. I just hope that the big-screen movie-theater experience doesn't die off anytime soon, although it's struggling, as that still is the undisputed best way to experience a truly great film.

For me it'd either be the 80's or the 2010's. The 80s because the atmosphere in all the films beiong produced was always so rich. 10s because of the sheer volume of amazing stuff that's come out in just a few years.

It's really hard to pick when every decade is full of classics but I really loved the 90s. How can you argue with this list.

Really difficult to choose a decade. I think for me it's between the 60's, 70's and 2000's.

1960's:

2001
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Great Escape
Cool Hand Luke (a serious contender for my favourite film EVER had it not been for The Godfather five years later)
In the Heat of the Night
Blow-Up
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
From Russia With Love (they're two of the Bond films that deserve recognition as films in their own right, FRWL and OHMSS)
Thunderball (yeah, it's another Bond, but this was one of my first movie experiences on VHS as a kid, still a great film today)
The Longest Day

1970's:

Traffic (best film made in my lifetime so far)
Road to Perdition (Sam Mendes' best film; you'll watch this and then go "Man, FUCK American Beauty" after you see it. Seriously.)
Casino Royale (the best Bond film and just outright one of the best movies ever shot, I fell in love with this movie in the theater 7 years ago and it's only gotten better as time's gone by)
Hotel Rwanda
The Last King of Scotland (my god, Forest Whitaker's performance... one of the top ten captured on screen in the past twenty years, for sure)
The Departed Infernal Affairs (I have to give it to the original over the remake... though I love Scorsese and The Departed is certainly a contender for the best remake of all time)
Man on Wire
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Memento
Half Nelson (whatever you think of Ryan Gosling, he was absolutely fantastic in this movie)
Up
LOTR trilogy

My god. Now I'm thinking of everything that came out in the 90's, too. Add that decade in as well (I've not got the time to cite examples, unfortunately). Can't choose between those four decades. Cinema has truly been a remarkably consistent art form for the past 50 years or so. You just have to know where to look to find the good movies.

Personally I feel that the movies of the 50's were more epic, original, and had better acting and directing. Movies today seem to rely on special effects and beautiful actors instead of talented ones.

I've noticed that a lot of my favourite movies have been released in the late 1990s and early 2000s. To name a few: Amélie, Magnolia, Memento, Amores Perros, Ghost World, Donnie Darko, South Park:BL&U, American Beauty, Election, etc.
In general I seem to be biased towards the last couple of decades, but I won't vote for any yet, as I have also seen significantly more newer than "older" movies.

Really?Killer Joe and Moonrise Kingdom are the only films from last year that I really liked,the rest I seen were massive letdowns.
