I agree with this.

For movies, people don't just watch partial films, they watch full films. For music, people can either listen to individual songs/singles or full albums. So what we see here is that most casual movie viewers have seen at least 100 films, whereas most casual music listeners have not heard at least 100 albums because they mostly listen by song (or greatest hits compilation).

tbh, there's no plans for a movies site as there's far too many others already (and some very good ones at that, such as RT & IMDb which would have about a ten year head start on BEM, if it ever got off the ground). I'm personally more interested in specialist movie sites rather than sites that cover lots of media types as I feel that the opinions are likely to be more insightful and the ratings more accurate, and a specialist site usually has a better user experience as the content is built specifically for the subject matter.

The one thing about BEA that has kept it small (but also allowed it to develop) is the fact that it is purely focused on albums, and not music in general (it's a niche topic that not many other sites occupy). This also leads to a membership that are more interested in albums, which leads to some great individual charts.

The bigger sites that people are talking about in the rest of the thread are covering a lot more ground than BEA does right now. If BEA ever branched into new areas (non music), it would almost certainly be as a separate website. Books would more than likely be the next area that BEA would expand into (I have more of an interest in books than movies), but as people have mentioned, this site keeps me plenty busy by itself so it won't be happening for a while.

GoodReads is awesome, but I still feel we're in need of a proper Best Ever Movies. For the while I stick with IMDb, but the movie community there is... pretty unknowledgeable, to be quite frank.

Thank you for pointing that out, swedenman. The key word in my initial post is "exactly". I guess where I wanted to go with that is, to see if the algorithm for calculating ranks can be exported for another medium. Can we have a www.bestevermovies.com? (Apparently not. That site name is already being used. But you know what I mean.)

This site has shown me which albums have stood the test of time, which albums have proven themselves to be the most loved, most respected, most important. Not necessarily equivalent to most popular.

In a ranking of movies based on popularity, Star Wars is going to be near the top because most people have seen it. But is it most usually the favorite? What is the favorite movie of the 1970's? This site answers such questions for albums, based on individual voters choosing one album over another, not "I like these ones" which levels all "likes" to equal weight. That's what I'm looking for.

My point I guess was that I don't see BEA's overall chart and IMDB's movie chart much different in the audience that they attract. When I said "larger sample" i didnt mean everyone on the planet. Not everyone listens to albums so it would be silly to ask them to rank the ones they think are the best. I meant if we got everyone who really enjoyed listening to albums and asked them to make greatest overall charts and then aggregated the results, I doubt it would look much different than it does now.

I see what you mean and I would agree then. It would be interesting to gather many people who've listened to thousands of albums, not only the classic ones, make them build a chart, and see what the final ranking is.

People (at least in the occidental world) :

1. listen to singles, not albums
2. have never heard about Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Public Enemy, My Bloody Valentine, Boards Of Canada and whatever artist you love
3. don't listen to music that came out before the 2000's if they are young and after the 80's if they are old
4. listen exclusively to pop (though their might also be some hip-hop, rock or electronic, but in their poppiest forms imaginable)

This site is composed if people who know some music. Obviously we're not all Scaruffis with reviews for that obscure 60's psychedelic garage band which only sold 500 copies of their first album which only came out in India, but I'm not sure you realize how huger the average BEA member's musical culture is than the average listener's.

What I mean is that if we had the whole occidental world (I don't know about the rest, I'm afraid) on BEA, the top albums would be by the Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Lady Gaga and Usher. So I completely agree with Swedenman.

I see the charts here (overall, not individually) as more of a cohesive elementary guide towards extensive listening. I believe Necharsian is saying here isn't that "this site represents the common/casual listener" but that this isn't really determinative of reflecting "the general consensus of the avid music-listening community".

There is a lot of general "safe zones" that hold this back from being really reflective (RYM is no different, but its a little better at times).

In some sense, but our top 100, for the most part, is a collection of canonical classics that almost any major music publication will recognize as very important/good/whatever albums (not saying that music publications define quality, just mentioning them in the sense that they represent a large portion of what I previously referred to as the avid music-listening community), and that most avid music-listeners will appreciate even if they don't enjoy them. Of course, avid music-listeners love many albums that aren't in our top 100 or even our top 1000, but in general I don't think you'd see as much of a consensus on these albums among these people as you would for the albums in our top 100. There are, of course, exceptions, but for the most part I think this holds pretty true.
