I have the tendency to take things way too seriously myself. Two counteractive thoughts.

The first one I've always tried to live by: "If you can't laugh at yourself, you've no business laughing at anybody else." So, you've got to learn to laugh at yourself, which is trickier than you'd think, and you may have to resort to public displays of ridiculousness.

The second one I've discovered recently, present here as my new signature line:

Every time I try to act laid back and be the life of party it still has a sad undercurrent, so I don't know, I think the important thing is just to be yourself

I'm probably one of the people who never take themselves seriously, it's a bad habit of mine to make a joke out of everything I possibly can, something I want to stop so I stop irking people as much, but it's something I also really enjoy doing. Adding to this (and this is not aimed at you outlaw but is general observations aimed at the human race):

Realize that you are one of several billion people and very few people care what you do or how you do it.
Realize that you are here for a finite amount of time and you had better make the most of it!
Realize that you aren't particularly fascinating or interesting even if you do think that about yourself
Realize that 99% of what you do has been done before by someone else and for the most part probably done better!

Learn to value other people's experiences as much as your own and understand that they may view the world differently as a result.
Learn to nurture the very few people who do care about you - their opinions of you are the most important and actually count for something. You want to realise that before it's too late.
Learn to laugh at yourself and don't get so upset when other people do as well.
Learn to do stuff that you would not normally do and takes you several miles out of your comfort zone.
Learn what is really important to you and what you are prepared to fight for and forget about the rest - it's just noise.
Learn that there is always someone smarter, quicker, stronger, harder working, funnier, more inventive, more knowledgeable and lots of other things than you - that doesn't make them better than you - just smarter, quicker etc than you. Respect that and move on!

And if all else fails - deep breath and smile!
