I read a lot of fiction, yes. Don't judge me. I just like the true stuff better. My point's gotten skewed here because ... well because it's a strange point, I won't lie. It's just how I feel. It's a weird quirk of mine that I like things that are written AS fiction, you know? IDK, I know that's really strange but that's what I feel.

I mean a lot of my favorite books and stories have been written in the first person. I don't know. It's just a weird quirk to me that I like things from the heart better.

And I'm a high school student currently enrolled in a college English class. So please don't judge.

I think we all have some weird quirks and now you're just getting to see mine.

I mean, third person is fine. Even with books I feel dirty reading first person if it's not autobiographical. I don't know. That's weird to me.

But again, I don't have anything against the artists per say, I'll still listen to stuff like that, I'll still read stuff like that. And for that I feel like I'm going to music hell too. But if music hell really is Weezer, Kokomo, New Order, and AFI, then music hell sounds like fun.

It's like that old idea that the people in hell sound so much more interesting than those in heaven, ya know?

Well I mean they are the J. Geils Band. Just because there name actually has J. Geils in it that's not their fault. Now if they went around as J. Geils and the J. Geils band then you have a point. I mean do The News or The Range not get to use their names? I blame J. Geils for being such a narcissist that he had to name his band after him. 😉

I mean, to me, selling out is always about the worst thing you can do. Just changing what you stand for and make music for.

So I mean Nickelback, AFI (they're first album is INCREDIBLE, go check it out), any boy band, Fall Out Boy, Metallica, maybe Green Day, maybe White Lies, etc.

The thing about all the "sellout" accusations is that it's impossible to tell what the musicians actual thought process on a band going in a different direction is. It always just seems to be people whining because they dont like the new sound. Saying someone soldout is just baby talk for "they started making music that i didnt like" boo hoo. Hey crazy thought maybe Metallica or Weezer actually liked their newer albums when they made them. People change. You cant expect an artist to have the same mindset or stand for the same things musically over the years. Are you the exact same person you were 10 years ago?

benpaco wrote:

Lastly anyone who rights things they don't live as if they've lived them. If it's Eminem or Childish Gambino who's joking about doing something, great, I get the joke and I like that music. But if you talk about doing drugs you've never done, cutting when you've never been depressed, etc, that's not OK with me at all. Lil Wayne, Kanye, and probably a LOT of other rappers are here, as well as a fair number of pop punk bands and I don't even know who else.

Like, you could genuinely change your own ideals, or beliefs, and so the music you make is going to change. It would be disingenuous to keep making music about something you no longer believe in, or agree with. Look at The Dixie Chicks for example. They changed their subject matter, and in some ways, their style, but it wasn't because they wanted a different audience or anything. They genuinely had new perspectives on things, and they wouldn't be true to themselves if they kept doing the same music they had been doing. JMO.

I mean, I get that. If you change your styles just to try to sell music, poo on you. That's why I have to put the asterisks of maybe on White Lies and Green Day, they may have just changed because they wanted to change. I suppose any of them could've but some are pretty drastic. I mean, AFI is the best example, I think, they started out as a very high energy Gilman Street style punk band. I could understand maturing and changing, but they've instead gone for a much more teenage and poppy sound. I mean, maybe that was their way of maturing, but maybe not.

Dixie Chicks are a great example that bands do change, though. And I really am fine with that as long as it's a change from your heart, ya know?

Yeah New Order I totally swing back and forth on. I can listen to them and just justify it's a totally different band but it feels weird since they did agree that the band would stop if any of them died. It's a different band and the same band and it's confusing. There's times I think they were huge innovators and a great help to the music world, and there are times where I think they just screwed stuff up. I don't know. I do really like them, not as much as Joy Division but they're still great.

Oh god this is tough.

Bands that keep going after the singer dies I have mixed feelings about. Sublime with Rome just isn't the same, but they aren't trying to be. They're playing the old stuff but they basically acknowledge that Bradley was better. Morphine's reincarnation works well but it's hard to replace Sandman. Flippin New Order, though ... they made an agreement that Joy Division wouldn't continue if any of them died, so they just changed the name and kept going ... they go to hell, I think.

Matisyahu goes straight to hell. Kicked a fan in the face because she was taking pictures of him and he didn't like that, he tried to pay her off to not tell anyone, then spat wine all over his own mother on television.

Now don't get me wrong, I listen to AFI, Green Day, New Order, Matisyahu, White Lies, etc. I just can't agree with them always.

I know first-hand that addiction is a huge hurdle, but I'm super-disappointed in D'Angelo not overcoming it in these past ten+ years. He's not necessarily going to musician hell, I'm just super-bummed that such a talented musician has trouble touring and making new music because of their addiction. It not only highlights the problems of their own addiction but addiction in general.

With each interview, I feel like GY!BE is condemning themselves to douchebaggery; also not hell, but to a point where I despise the musician yet enjoy their music. Not to mention Kanye, he's been a giant douche, but his songs have always been to an extent introspective and self-criticising to some degree on his albums....until Yeezus; Yeezus was a step too far for me... he's got a baby mama yet he mostly raps about other sex he's had

The J. Geils Band going on tour as The J. Geils Band. Without inviting J. Geils, letting it go far enough for Geils to have to file suit against his former bandmates.

- Choosing to put out a song / album you think will sell, instead of one that you think is good
- Plagiarism

Other than those two, I'm not really sure there's anything I'd have a problem with, other than hateful / threatening lyrics, or just generally screwing people over to further yourself.
