Okay, as much as I like Heart, Olivia Tremor Control has been my second favorite discovery of this tournament so far, behind Alcest.

Here's my writeup for Dreamboat Annie for the BEA1001 project:

The album is already a favorite by the first chorus of the first track. “Try to understand, try to understand, try try try to understand, I’m a Magic Man.” One of the ten best rock songs of all time, it changes the game for female rockers, almost absent from the charts in 1976, by establishing that it can be done, and it can sound really, really good.

After the first song, it slows down a bit as Ann sings a fragment of Dreamboat Annie, which appears twice later on the album. Ann’s vocals, with just a touch of the singer-songwriter sound that was the norm at the time. outshine most of her contemporaries. More Rock and Roll follows with Crazy On You. If Magic Man rewrote the rules for women in rock, Crazy On You demonstrates what can be done with it. They will go farther with it with Barracuda on the next album. Next is the Song of the Sea, a 6½ minute ballad featuring an interesting blend of the vocals with some intricate steel guitar playing. Part two of Dreamboat Annie wraps up side one.

Side two opens with another rocker, White Lightning and Wine. Although not as familiar as the first two, it rocks just as hard. The next track is (Love Me Like Music) I’ll Be Your Song. The hard edge the band has established so far is softened quite a bit, establishing that Heart can sound pretty if they want to. It’s a pleasant melody that you want to sing along with. Sing Child, another rocker, adds new elements to the Heart sound. Nancy’s vocals are more involved. There’s a flute and a guitar solo that showcase the band. There’s a bit of playful aggression here, as with a subtext of “Sing, I dare you. But you won’t be able to rock like this.” How Deep It Goes is the penultimate track. Of the four ballads on the album, it is the prettiest in terms of vocals and melody. The album ends with the longest part of Dreamboat Annie. As the song that ties the album together, it hits emotional notes of adventure and hope, mixed with longing and loneliness.

It was bound to happen. This is one of those where both albums are in my top 100. The good news is, at least one of my 100 will make it to the next round. The bad news is, one of my 100 will be eliminated this round.

I'm listening to and enjoying Dusk at Cubists Castle right now.

Dreamboat Annie contains a little bit of everything good about music from the 70's, from hard rockers to seductive ballads.

Dreamboat Annie is cute, but I like the other much more, even if I wouldn't say I love it.
