1974 remains a mystery. It is part of the golden age of rock & roll but for some reason comes nowhere near any of the other years in that period.

Still better than some of the 1990's but not a good year. Not a good year at all.

Second Helping by Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best album of 1974 by the way.

Would there be any year that everyone agrees just wasn't all that great? Surely there's been a 'great' album released every year since at least 1960.

Maybe 1974 just saw the least 'great' albums, which would be a surefire way to label it as the worst year in music.
I mean, the album doesn't suck, but best of the year? Really?

Besides Pink Floyd not releasing anything, what happened in 1974 so that nothing super-awesome got made?

Yes, the Lamb is the best album of 1974, and it is generally underrated (as most of the prog rock albums too).

I think 1970-1973 was the peak for prog rock albums, 1974 was the last good year for the genre (except a few albums, A Trick of the Tail by Genesis from 1976 is a good example, even if it was the first non-Gabriel Genesis album, it is amongst their finest prog rock releases)
is currently the only 1974 albums on my chart, but those first two Brian Eno albums could just as easily be on my chart. Actually been considering adding Taking the Tiger By Strategy to my chart. It's flawless.

1974 was an ok year for music. It does fall short of 1973, but only because of how many classic albums came out in 1973. When I think of my 3 favorite albums of 1974, those three are:

1. Roxy Music - Country Life
2. Bob Marley - Natty Dread
3. Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
