I actually enjoyed Saturday Night Fever (the soundtrack)... well, the parts that the Bee Gees didn't do, anyway. I do think I'll need more recs in that area, though. I've listened to a lot of George Clinton's stuff and Chic, but not much else.

Maybe I'll start the new thread this week, if I find the time.

Yes! That's pretty much the common consensus. You should definitely watch their documentary "Nothing Can Hurt Me". It's on Netflix and would probably be interesting even for people not into their music.

Some say so... I dunno, I think it sounds different enough to be its own genre. It's far less raw, involving mostly remixes, but somehow feels more primitive to me. I think it's because they emphasize rhythm more.

Yeah, I'm still going forward (I'm in 1978 right now). I'm thinking of reinventing the thread, cause this one was taking too long to maintain and was only getting used by a handful of users. Anyway, I'll explain in more detail in my first listening log on Monday. I will be soliciting for more recs eventually.

I agree with the voice being very good, but I'm not the greatest fan of his music in general, and I still believe his heyday was with Massive Attack.

Here I come again with a big list of shit I can't see yet (although I'm sure some of it is probably on Norman's chart):

Cymande - Cymande (poppy British jazz-funk)
Big Youth - Screaming Target (on of the greatest reggae toasters of all-time on his best full-length)
Jerry Garcia - Garcia (the best Grateful Dead-related release)
Richard Thompson - Henry the Human Fly (just great folk rock)
The Weather Report - Live in Tokyo (waaaaay better than Sing the Body Electric, which borrowed from the same recordings - I think pretty much everything the Report did was great, but this particularly so)
Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music
Ornette Coleman - Science Fiction (my favourite Coleman release after The Shape of Jazz)
Junior Byles - Beat Down Babylon (some truly fantastic roots reggae - 'I've Got a Feeling', 'Beat Down Babylon', 'A Place Called Africa' are some of my favourite reggae songs ever)
Funkadelic - America Eats Its Young (probably the craziest record put out under the Funkadelic name - it's hit'n'miss as fuck, but all the more charming because of that)
Horace Andy - Skylarking (just one of the best and most distinctive voices in music)
Donny Hathaway - Live (the definitive Hathaway release)
Candi Staton - Candi Staton (countrified, string-laden Southern soul, essential)
Betty Wright - I Love the Way You Love (if only for 'Clean Up Woman')
Van Morrison - Saint Dominic's Preview (perhaps his best after Veedon Fleece and Astral Weeks)
Ahmad Jamal - Freeflight (Jamal live, lovely stuff)

There's a bunch of other dope stuff (including a bunch of Philly soul albums, which was a major sound that year, but you've already acknowledged the best of the lot), but I promised myself that I'd limit my suggestions.
