I voted for Josh Homme because of what he did on Arctic Monkeys' Humbug. I personally feel its one of the best produced albums of all time.

But what about David Bowie? His own stuff obviously as well as Lust For Life and Transformer surely makes him worth a mention?
I have liked the work that other producers have done more (Martin, Eno, Dr. Dre) but this honor will always go to Phil Spector. He revolutionized what could be done in the studio - the music that was released on record could now sound significantly different than what the artists could recreate live with instruments.

I also have to say that my least favorite major producer is Rick Rubin. Though he's showcased some of the best music of the past several decades, his stripped-down production style is the opposite of what I believe is good production, and I think I would personally enjoy the music those artists released more had it been produced by somebody else.

Ah shit, is it coming off as complaining? That's not my intention.

Yeah, CHz definitely took that route, although I don't think it was the mixing, I think it was just purport the amount of layers of sound they used, but that's just speculation.

Something like Loveless(since you brought it up) is indeed mixed that way, but I can still pick out each part, and the music itself takes full use of the dynamic range of the headphones I'm listening to it on right now. This is opposed to something like All Things Must Pass, a record I like for the music, but I can't help but feel like it sounds incredibly muddy in comparison. This may be an aesthetic quality that I just happen to find extremely irritating, but I still wouldn't go as far to say he was one of the greatest producers of all time. (Also have no knowledge of his girl group stuff, so I can't attest to that)

I see what you mean. In all honesty, I dont exactly have a good ear for production and stuff. I am very very illiterate in the area of what exactly I am listening for in mixing or production. But all those points make sense to me.

Phil Spector was excellent especially considering the tech he was working with and the innovation. Take his hits, strip off his stamp on the hits and just produce the albums more traditionally for the time and those same songs I don't feel would be hits. And they certainly wouldn't be as legendary or memorable as they are.

Take his hits, strip off his stamp on the hits and just produce the albums more traditionally for the time and those same songs I don't feel would be hits. And they certainly wouldn't be as legendary or memorable as they are.
