an_outlaw wrote:

I don't feel like doing anything anymore. I keep feeling unhappy and I don't know what to do about it. I can't assert myself to do things I enjoy. Things which I enjoy like playing guitar, reading or writing have all been put on hold. I would like to be doing them but I can't focus myself anymore. It's like I am drifting through my days in a daze right now. I'm alright when I am engaging with people but when I find myself alone I'm just lying down or sitting with no purpose. I can't be bothered with anything right now and I really should be doing something as I don't feel happy at all inside.

Simplest answer is the best starting point: Take a nap, or go to bed early. See how you feel when you wake up. If you don't feel like doing anything, perhaps that is because your body is telling you to do nothing at all for awhile.

More activity may not be the answer.

I don't really see what I could add to what has already been said, but don't let it grow out of control, outlaw. Professionals can really help. When you feel that you can't handle it alone anymore, don't wait. have you talked about it to your family?

Don't give up, man. I'm with you. Like a lot of people here, I've lived it, and I know it's something important. Seems like Intenret forums are for naturally depressive people 🤔

I love INFJ's!!! As an ENFP, we're a perfect romantic match 😉

And not to be totally contrarian, but INFP's and INFJ's are less similar than you think! an INFJ's dominant function is introverted intuition (followed by extroverted feeling), while an INFP's dominant function is introverted feeling (followed by extroverted intuition). Wild stuff!

EDIT: how that probably seemed super rude. I dont' have any advice beyond what other people have said, but I genuinely hope that you feel better, outlaw.

swedenman wrote:

Fair enough. Like I said, those are things that have helped me personally, but they may not help everyone. The drugs in particular I would recommend being wary of. It's just that I've tried dropping acid or smoking weed to help me deal with depression and it's worked wonders. It's not for everyone, but it is something to try, as long as you're careful.

Also, when I said "never stop doing things", I meant that more as a "except for when you should be sleeping". Sleep is important, obviously. However, I personally find it best to keep myself occupied when I'm awake.

As for the relationships bit, I wasn't really suggesting getting into a committed relationship. I meant it more as casual dating, which can be a huge stress relief for me, and which are rarely messy.

However, I'm not sure I agree that eating healthier could be detrimental. Changing up your eating habits can have unexpected consequences, but eating healthier rarely has a negative impact.

Drugs we agree
For me, rest, not sleep, also helps. Just to sit and think and be. That helps me. I think that dpends on who you are.
I've never been able to be in a non serious relationship, at this point in my life its all been with the intent of being serious or just not happening.
Eating healthier I'm personally scarred by I think. Took it too far and stopped eating lunch or having a real breakfast. Don't do that. Cut out soda. That I still do frankly, swede's entirely right that's helped a TON. Other small changes are good too, but I wouldn't go radical.

A couple of questions spring to mind:

1. How often do you feel like this?
2. When did this feeling begin?
3. How pervasive is it?

4. Do you have good supports to seek out? (Friends, family, professionals)?
5. What do you usually do to get through this?

Everybody gets down from time to time. It sucks. I hope this doesn't last long.

As an INFP (if you buy that system ... I do), I'm inclined towards these thoughts myself. Just know that you're not alone and we're here for you. Also, be willing to think about going to see a therapist. Seriously every friend I know who avoided it only ended more screwed up as a result, myself included. I did all of those 1 through 5 and other things but I bottled and bottled and it was bad. I'm lucky nothing I did ended up causing me more permanent harm.

swedenman wrote:

I am all-too-familiar with that feeling. It sounds like you're suffering from some form of depression. My best advice would be to talk to a psychiatrist. Aside from that, there are all sorts of tricks I've learned over the years to deal with depression:

1. Spend some time with your friends.
2. Pick up a new hobby. Obsess over something for a while.
3. Get into a new TV show.
4. Start exercising/exercise more if you already do. Try walking or biking places instead of driving.
5. Try sleeping in a new spot in your house.
6. Try some non-chemically-addictive recreational drugs when you have some free time.
7. Never stop doing things. If you get bored with something, find something else to do.
8. Try eating healthier. Soda especially is notorious for worsening depression, so try staying off of it if you don't already.
9. Start dating if you're not in a relationship, but don't take it too fast.

Those are all short-term options. If the problem persists in the long-term, maybe consider moving to a new city or finding a new job (or just finding a job if you're unemployed). Maybe even go back to school if you never got your degree (I know nothing about your life). Those options all require a lot of commitment, but sometimes committing to something is the best way to kick yourself out of a depressive state.

Let me know if you need any more advice. I've lived with depression pretty much my whole life, and over time I've gotten better and better at keeping it under control, so if you need help doing the same I'd be happy to give it 😄

EDIT: I see you aren't interested in seeing a doctor. I know that feeling. I've been pretty reluctant to see one myself. However, I'd urge you to reconsider. I know it's hard, but it can work wonders.

Let me say, 1 through 5 will be great. All of those things will help you. I'd be careful with the other ones.

an_outlaw wrote:

I don't want to see any doctor though. I just don't want to.

How about a therapist? My girlfriend has a Master's degree in Art Therapy and there's also many people who practice music therapy. It's a far warmer relationship than the conventional doctor.

I have a long history of depression that comes and goes. I generally need to keep myself busy at all times and when things slow down I feel lost. Sounds a lot like what you're going through. But I think it can be really important to slow down, think about the work and do very little. We tend to overstimulate ourselves in today's society, where we're always plugged in.

Doctor, outside time, new hobbies, and b-complex vitamins if you want to focus yourself more. I hate to see one of my friends depressed. Never believe you don't have a purpose, no matter what's going on in your life.

Is it the music you're listening to? This is why i avoid dark messages. Music affects the mind. It's a proven fact, and you should go for less depressing and more uplifting messages if so.

Oh wow, I feel the exact same way. I just think it is because I'm a very apathetic, disconnected person, but I don't think you're like that...Definitely try to do what people said, though I'm not sure distracting yourself will engage you...I'm not sure simply doing things will make you actually into doing the things, you know? Still, doesn't hurt to try. And I think it is always good to engage yourself and do something you're passionate about. And I'm sure it will pass. Though you're probably going to have to just get through it. It is definitely difficult...

There are some of these which I can do. I'll see what works for me.
