Hm yeah I hadnt actually thought of where it would actually be placed. I dont exactly know whats doable or not with them but is it possible to have the same shoutbox across different pages on the site? (f.ex the shoutbox located on the forums would read the same as one on the overall chart). It could potentially be a way of bridging the gap between the charts and the forums.

In terms of spam I think shoutboxes are fairly easy to moderate, depending on where its located i suppose, or maybe only members of a certain level can use it (level 2 or something)

Im just spitballing here. Im not sure if it would benefit the site but its an interesting idea to investigate atleast.

The trouble with shout boxes is the type of content that is typically added to them, they often seem to be quite spammy and often trollish in their content and I'm not sure where a shout box would live. or maybe there'd be multiple shout boxes across the site(?)

Maybe a shoutbox would work better here? I mean we could always set up our own BEA chatroom through Tinychat or something if theres interest for it.

It has been discussed before, and it's on the list to be done (with a few caveats e.g. it will be unmoderated and away from BEA). However, it's not a priority at the moment and is likely something for 2014. TBH, I'm not sure a chat-room brings too much to the table for BEA, but that's just my opinion. If it needs too much babysitting, it will take valuable time up that could be used for other things.

See my post about 12 years on message boards and chatroom's having virtually no ill effect on activity.

I really like the unique forum situation that exists here. There's something nice about how active a forum is. I feel like a chatroom wouldn't take away from the overall activity of the site, but would take away from the forums, which I personally prefer.

On every website I've been on in the last twelve years has not ever suffered an activity drop due to a chatroom access so I don't understand why this is an assumed thing. It's not like discussion at length will disappear and having a conversation in the down hours would be great. This website has skype groups/users and the website's message board activity didn't drop when they started sharing usernames.

A lot of forums and sites like this have a dedicate IRC or Mibbit chatroom so the idea popped into my head if there was one or if we should have one? If we have one and I was unaware then I guess just tell me and this thread is over, otherwise; thoughts?
