Not trying to be a dick or anything but the easiest way to get recommendations off people is to look at their charts and if you want to filter it more to stuff you'd think you'd like you can look up one of your fave albums and then look at other people who have it their chart and look at what else they listen to. It's what I did when I first joined and I'm guessing other people have done it.

The New Pornographers- (almost any of their albums, but Twin Cinema is my favorite)
The Decemberists- first three albums
Guided by Voices- get the best of (I can't remember what it's called)
Belle and Sebastian- If You're Feeling Sinister, Tigermilk, Push Barman to Open Old Wounds, Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Fountains of Wayne- Welcome Interstate Managers
