Absolutely. Since I started doing graphic design at a collective of art magazines, I've definitely slowed down a bit. By the end of the week, I've usually consumed more art than I can handle, but the number of galleries and museums here is incredible. I walk through the main gallery district every day, past some of the most respected galleries, so that's pretty amazing.

My favorite museum is actually just outside the city. It's called the Dia. It's a huge warehouse type space and has a few of Richard Serra's Coils, and loads of Robert Smithson sculptures, and other works that are generally too large to have on permanent display in normal museums.

Serra's Coils are one of those types of artworks that simply can't be appreciated unless experienced in person. They're massive steel structures that consume your space in an indescribable way.

And it is so true, seeing paintings in person are a totally different experience, yes it's more inspiring.

For example, Gustav Klimt's "Emilie Flöge" was fantastic to see in person when I visited Vienna last year. It is a big painting, not a small one that many would expect. The silver and gold dots on her dress shine like little starts. It was an absolutely beautiful experience to see it.

haha. pretty much. lots of her artwork, my live music photos, and tons of thrift store finds such as clown portraits and tacky religious paraphernalia. eventually, when we move and get a bigger place, we'll likely turn rooms into wild installations.

I was actually lucky enough to have a photo in the Museum of Modern Art as part of their 9/11 exhibition. They accepted pretty much anything related to 9/11, but it still felt like the highest point of my life. in one room was my shitty little photo. In the next room over was Starry Night.

Years ago I was studying the great photographer Andreas Gursky, and I came across one of my favorite quotes about art.

If you can't make it good make it big. And if you can't make it big make it red.

I found the Mona Lisa boring for the longest time. A few years back, though, I was reading through that art history book I linked earlier and after flipping through pages and pages of medieval and early Renaissance art, analyzing the details as I went, I flipped over to the Mona Lisa. I was floored -- the precision brush strokes, the shades, the expression...

I thought maybe that feeling would disappear when I got to studying modern art, but it didn't. Da Vinci still jumps out at me in art museums and I still feel like I see something new every time I look at his work. As I said earlier, I usually prefer modern art (including Dali), but I still feel like da Vinci's genius had something special about it. Maybe my experience was singular, but given the renown of the painting (and the artist), I really doubt it.

I find the Mona Lisa pretty ugly. The sharpness of the background detail distracts from the portrait and makes the painting look really flat.
