I give them some credit though for being unique and having some oddball decisions in there. Comes off more as someone's personal chart than a major publication's work.

But I don't have a problem with Closer, Revolver and Parklife as the best albums by JD, Beatles and Blur.

I mean, one can make the case for Parklife. I think Blur was better. But I've never met a Joy Division fan who preferred Closer to Unknown Pleasures. And IDK, list wise, White Album and Sgt Peppers seem more high up usually, and personally, Rubber Soul is better. IDK.

Secondsoul wrote:

imo the overall Top 500 is way better than BEA's. Obviously if you are American, you'll disagree with that. You've got to understand that NME is British so unless you have grown up in GB/Ireland you won't understand why the likes of Oasis, Pulp, Arctic Monkeys or PJ Harvey are in the Top 20. Personally I think this Top 500 is refreshing and there are lots of albums I love further down the chart that are largely ignored or not known about on BEA. The best American bands like Pixies, The Strokes, Nirvana, Television, REM, Sonic Youth are up there, whereas the shit like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver are nowhere to be seen. Only one album by Dylan in Top 50 is also great, though a major negative is Amy Winehouse as high as number 28!

I don't think you can pile Americans into that. I mean, it's not so much Pulp's presence, it's nice to see a list give them credit. Same with Arctic Monkeys. Not familiar enough with PJ Harvey to feel comfortable passing judgement there, though after a first listen of that album it was just sort of eh. I hate Oasis but OK, whatever, even charts I love usually have Oasis somewhere. I don't JUST like American music, I'd love to see more Madness, more Beatles, more JD on here. I think it'd be great for Bon Iver to be up there. I don't like Dylan and I'm OK with Winehouse. I think it depends a little on the person.

Necharsian wrote:

lol

Its always so strange to me when people post lists like this. What do you guys want these to look like? Cookie cutter Beatles at #1! Pink Floyd! Radiohead! Doesnt looking at the same "best" charts get boring?

Whichever albums NME wouldve included people would cry and complaing and be like "b-b-but why is this not in the top 20 waa"

It's not what isn't in the top 20 that I have issues with, it's what is. Yeah, my top 20 is MY top 20. If a major magazine had that cookie cutter I'd be surprised but happy. I don't want the same exact chart as everyone else. I'm really glad to see Pulp in there, it's nice to see some JD up towards the top, etc. It's more what is in the top 20 that, to me, just doesn't belong there. Again, it's probably a personal thing, but I do take some issue with some of what they have.

this quote from one of the contributors really sums it all up.

Quote:

I and the rest of the NME alumni were simply told to vote for our 'favourite' albums - Ideally a top 50 but really anything we could rustle up by the following Monday.
And herein lies a flaw inherent in all such lists: The results are bound to be slanted towards the choices of the voters who they happen still to have contact details for, which will inevitably be the more recent contributors (Still, having first written for them over 20 years ago, they didn't do too badly tracking me down).
Inevitably, with the whole thing being a bit last-minute and no-budget, the votes were also those of individuals who could be arsed to sweat over a difficult task in their free time for no financial reward. Welcome to 21st century publishing.

So basically, a bunch of writers, who weren't being paid, were asked to put together lists over the course of a weekend. It was all a rush job. Think about how much time you guys had to put into your charts. Hell, I'm still not satisfied with my top 100. Many of the picks in the top 25 are truly revolting.

But I expect nothing different from NME.

I don't understand the idea that The Queen is Dead is the greatest album ever made... at all. But whatever gets #1 will always receive that sort of scrutiny. I'm glad to see Is This It so high though.

I enjoy those artists, but I can still think of plenty of American artists who I'd put in the top 20 before them by a longshot (Except maybe Different Class by Pulp which I love).

imo the overall Top 500 is way better than BEA's.

Just had a look through the one's they've up on their site so far (500-201), not bad by any means, it's different from other top 500 lists which creates some appeal for it, sure, there are some choices that baffle me and that I don't like at all, but that comes with every chart, so all in all it's not too bad.
