Wow that's some beating. Logical I guess. Anyway, don't miss out on Cale's 70s solo output, it's always interesting, generally very good, sometimes splendid.

I've heard 2 Eno albums and 1 Cale album.
I have to say Paris 1919 is exceptional, but... Ambient 1 is just as exceptional, and then we have Another Green World on top. If we're just going for solo efforts as well, not including engineering/producing and guest appearances, just purely the solo works, then I'd have to go with Eno. Though, overall as a musician I prefer Cale, but just for his solo efforts: Eno.

I'm ashamed to say I have never listened to any John Cale solo stuff until just now listening to some of Paris, 1919. That album is a fucking revelation for me! It's brilliant in every way. I will need to listen to it again... And again and again. Then listen to other Cale stuff. As if now I am not voting. I adore Brian Eno but something tells me that if this match took place in 1 month I may honestly love Cale's music more than Eno's. Eno just got a massive head start.

Ambient 1 is one of my desert island albums and Another green World and Anbient 4 and Here Cime The Warm Jets and Discreet Music are all fabulous too.

I don't vote for now. I may do the unthinkable in a couple days if this round is still open.

If The Velvet Underground was factored into this too then it would be too close to call, but as far as solo artists go I've gotta go with Eno.

I nominated Cale, but would have nominated Eno if he wasn't already picked. I don't think Eno needs any promoting. Everyone knows just how brilliant the man is.

But let's talk about John Cale. Prior to the Velvet Underground, John Cale was making a name for himself in the avant garde alongside John Cage and his mentor Aaron Copeland. With The Velvet Underground, Cale's prior work in the avant garde helped give The Velvets their dark, tense atmosphere.

Much like Eno, Cale's impact is just as notable for his production as his own output. He produced Nico's discography, Modern Lovers, Horses, The Stooges, Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), The Jesus Lizard, among other things, while also making major contributions to albums by Eno and Nick Drake.

While Lou Reed emerged as the songwriting legend of Velvet Underground, Cale own discography is arguably better and more consistent, while just as groundbreaking. If you're new to Cale, listen to Paris 1919, Fear, Music For a New Society and move on from there. Cale creates a mood like no other.
