The best album by The Cure is the one with all the hit songs. 'Greatest Hits' or 'Disintegration' depending on who you ask.

The Cure is a great group, but I wouldn't give any one of their albums a 5/5.

Outside of "Disintegration", which is a 4.5/5, the others all seem to be a 4/5.

Precisely. I don't know why you should get caught up in the fact that critics don't like those three albums you do. All that matters is that you like those albums and you get personal satisfaction from it. Whether or not critics like it should be irrelevant.

meccalecca wrote:

I almost agree with that actually. I prefer the Wild Hunt of the three, but Shallow Grave was fresh, felt like something new. For me, There's No Leaving Now felt like he was re-writing the same songs (to his credit, they're good songs). I'd maybe give Shallow and There's No Leaving 4's and Wild Hunt a 4.5. I'd love to see him expand. Right now I feel like he's in the same zone as Beach House. Everything is good (which is hard to complain about) but has started to sound the same.

I see what you mean generally. Personally I see his discog as starting with a beautiful sound that he perfected on The Wild Hunt. Then he changed more the feel of his music and the mood with the EP Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird. I feel that EP along with The Wild Hunt is about as great as it gets. With his most recent LP There's No Leaving Now he has changed his sound quite a bit. I mean its mostly in terms that it feels a lot less austere and natural, more produced and more ballads and less fingerpicking earthy feels. It also has substantially more production and varied instrumentation.

I do agree that if I wasn't a fanboy who has listened to every release of his over between 50 and 150 times, I probably would see his sound as staying basically the same. I would love to see a big change if it is well executed. Part of me wants him to not fix what's not broken and part of me wants to see him totally surprise me.

And the comparison to Beach House in that regard is pretty spot on.

Pretty much any diehard fan of rock music knows that The Cure is one of the all time greats.

Now, when the fuck are Scritti Politti gonna get the acclaim they deserve?

It's not like they're The Beatles or Bob Dylan. The Cure is a popular band, but not that many critics would call them legendary. That's just the popular opinion.

And I'm not sure what you're going on about with Green Day and Blink-182. The Cure received four 4.5 star ratings from Allmusic, Green Day received two and one 5 star rating (which is American Idiot, so I wouldn't take that particular review that seriously). Blink-182 got one 4.5 star rating and no 5 star ratings.

And no, just because critics disagree with you doesn't make them dumb.

True. Personally, I'd call the Cure legendary. The Cure were quite influential on post-punk and alternative rock. Plus, Disintegration is a timeless classic, I would put it on the same level as The Queen Is Dead & Dark Side of the Moon.

Also, as for Green Day & Blink 182, that 5-star review of American Idiot is what I was referring to. American Idiot isn't bad, but I don't see how an album like that could get a 5-star score, whereas Disintegration & those Cure albums that I mentioned have lower ratings than American Idiot.

Music is subjective, though. We all have different likes and dislikes.

Overall, does anybody know why this happens? Why is it that timeless classics such as Seventeen Seconds & Faith receive average to poor reviews, and Green Day & Blink 182 get better reviews by the Cure?

Many now-canonical albums were met with critical indifference at release, such as The Velvet Underground & Nico, There's a Riot Goin' On, and all three of Black Sabbath's early masterpieces. Critics will often whiff if they don't know how to listen to something or if an artist changes direction unexpectedly (e.g., Led Zeppelin III). Also, critics tend to be intellectuals, so they'll sometimes turn up their noses at music that seems lowbrow (e.g., Sabbath). There's also a tendency to play follow the leader in music reviews. Once a major publication (like Rolling Stone or Pitchfork) pans an album, others will be less shy about expressing displeasure.

I don't have any strong feelings about the Cure or whether those albums should be regarded as classics, but the point is that initial reviews should be taken with a grain of salt. Retrospective reviews are more reliable, since they will usually account for the album's impact.

        RNG lol.

Allmusic gave Springsteen's first two album, The River, and Born in the USA 5 stars and gave Darkness on the Edge of Town 4.5 stars. I'm not sure why you're putting any stock in it.

Also, as others have said, I'm not sure why you care.

Good point. I just care because Seventeen Seconds, Faith & Pornography are timeless classics, in my opinion. I find it kind of strange why Allmusic & other critics gave those mixed to poor reviews.

Also, the fact that Green Day & Blink 182 got better reviews than the Cure is just sad. Critics are dumb, I guess.

The Cure is a great band, though. Sorry if I come off as a fanboy in this topic.
