I don't have friends aside from my girlfriend. She loves Eisley, First Aid Kit, others I have forgotten...she likes most of the music I like except she hates upbeat music most of the time. She can only tolerate one Grimes song! XD

My mom likes all the upbeat music I've shown her...Grimes and Charli XCX and such. 😁

Some of my friends listen to standard radio pop, with maybe the easiest to get into indie or hip hop also, which is ok I guess but can get boring when you're pretty much listening to kiss fm playlist always.

Always had friends who are mad into hip hop, some of them way more than me even, which is cool for recs and I don't mind them djing at all when we're together.

Got just a couple close friends who are into the sort of stuff most my other friends would think is weird, they won't mind listening to Television or Modern Lovers or Joy Division or whatever, would probably still find Cocteau Twins or MBV or Jesus and Mary Chain too weird though, apart from one kid, maybe.

Friends do tend to think I know about music, nobody ever complains when I play music like I have some sort of authority on it or something, which is funny since I'm a relative music noob here, but then everyone here is music nerds which my friends mostly aren't, so.

I think a lot of the time, I listen to a combination of the things my friends listen to.

My girlfriend listens to a lot of Joanna Newsom, Elliot Smith, Of Montreal

My best friend growing up listened to a ton of industrial and electronic music

My one brother listens to a ton of jazz, funk, and weird experimental music.

The other brother got me into indie rock.

One close friend listens almost exclusively to old folk/americana and jazz. Got me into John Fahey years ago.

Another close friend is really into LCD Soundsystem and Daft Punk

Great answers so far. Funny how some seem to have really knowlegeable friends, and others are the "music guys" of their group. As for me :

- electronic music, with some hip hop, Pink Floyd, Doors and Supertramp thrown in. Apart from those, he doesn't listen to much music before the '90s. He does know a lot about the area he's restrained himself to, though.
- dadrocky, on the open-minded side : the classic folk-rock cannon (with a shared passion for Young and Dylan), with jazz, funk, soul, and brazilian music.
- very varied, lying on the dadrock side, but with interest ranging from hip hop to jazz to grunge to punk to world (don't like that label, but you get it). The best one to take recs from.
- assumed Pitchfork fan, listening to West, Blake, Lamar, Vampire Weekend, etc. Unexpected love for Warren Zevon, Sonic Youth, Gil Scott-Heron, too. I don't know that many things about him, but I hope I will discover more, because he seems very interesting.
- kinda metalhead, although he's been listening to other things lately. His tastes are pretty varied, but I'm not really a fan to be honest (not always, at least) : Fleet Foxes, cheesy soul, jazz-fusion, trap. Not sure at all about what he likes in general, actually. I've forced him to create an account and a chart here, though; his name is Lostros.

My other friends listen to music too obviously, but less "seriously" (if that means anything), or we don't talk about it much.

Generally, I don't talk about music that much with people in real life. That said, there was a time when I was dead drunk (one of the drunkiest times in mylife ever), and I talked very loudly and obnoxiously about how music was important to me (among other sentimental things) for hours. I don't remember much of it, but that's what people told me. Apparently, I even explained to a guy what punk was, by explaining him how it was supposed to oppose wanky prog, lol.

hmmm... I've talked to a lot of my friends about their music tastes, but here's some of the more interesting ones:

1. Modern Jazz, Third-wave ska, and Metal
2. Daft Punk, 90s pop-punk, and cheesy 80's synthpop
3. J-pop, K-pop, and Breaking Benjamin
4. EVERYTHING especially if it's weird ("I spent the weekend listening to John Zorn, Pansy Division, and Squarepusher")
5. Jazz-rock, Alt-rock radio, and EDM
6. Crunk, Reggaeton, and Big band swing.

Out of my closest friends:
1: One Direction, Lady Gaga, Girls Aloud, etc.
2: U2, Johnny Cash, Lionel Ritchie, etc.
3: Kanye West, Eminem, pretty much most hip hop (Though he's pretty knowledgeable about all music and does like early rock and roll a bit too)
4: David Guetta, that kind of stuff...
5: Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, classic rock generally
6: Much the same as me, introduced me to Mark Kozelek and ASIWYFA, also a massive Beck, Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, etc., recently lent me a 1TB hard drive full of music which I'm working through, there's at least 50+ artists on that hard drive that aren't even on this site yet, it's awesome.

Three friends of mine are big into Green Day, The Killers and Eminem (for one maybe the additional Bob Marley).
There's also one guy who's into EDM, I guess.
There's also people I know that listen to metal.

And those are only the people I know irl. My internet friends either have various musical genres and bands or they listen to anime soundtracks.

Some have similar tastes to me.
Some listen to monotonous pop-punk bands plus a couple of my recs.
Some haven't heard any new music since like the age of 7 other than Ministry of Sound comps.
Some don't even listen to music.

Most of my female friends usually listen to almost only pop and other mainstream music which are played on the radio. One of them sings, her favourites are female singers like Janis Joplin.
One of my best friend's taste in music is similar to mine's, she listen to rock (psychedelic or punk or indie). Her father is a punk rock musician with a band called The Galloping Coroners.

My male friends have different tastes in music. Some of them are related to music (either musicians or engineers) and they usually listen to blues, progressive/psychedelic rock, folk rock, punk, post-punk, indie, jazz etc.

My friends think of me that I am the girl who is a Beatles/60s freak and the one who listens to weird music.

That's awesome, no wonder your chart kicks ass. I had some college/grad school friends who were great resources for different (and interesting) kinds of music, but they are all scattered around the country now. I chat with them by email sometimes, but not enough to really reap the benefits.

1) shit ton of punk rock, folk
2) hip-hop, rap, metalcore
3) vocaloid, video game music
4) nothing but grunge
as for the fam
1) pop, dance
2) bring me the horizon, snow patrol

Probably my closest friend listens to the absolute worst teeny pop-punk bands: You Me At Six, Mayday Parade, Blitz Kids etc.. It wouldn't bother me if he listened to other stuff, I don't understand how he doesn't get bored of that same sound song after song.

One friend is really into Deep House and Downtempo Electronica, which is awesome, I love hearing new songs from him.

I'm privileged that a few of my friends actually consider me 'the music guy' and ask for reccomendations.

I do have a few friends who have legitimately developed taste in music, but they're far and fewer between.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Kings Of Leon, Little Mix, Whitney Houston, Lorde, Birdy etc etc

Sometimes Britpop and 80s artists. Sometimes classical (many various types which I won't go into) and one or two J-pop and Japanse video game and anime soundtracks ranging from guy who did the 'Final Fantasy VII' soundtrack to the music from 'Laputa Castle In The Sky'

Outside of BEA I am known as an Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Franz Ferdinand, The Smiths fan and mostly recently Frank Turner on the rock side. People also regard me as completely happy with everything on the radio and will have no problem with Capital, Heart FM or Smooth Radio being on. So lots of pop too.

For this people regard me as unspectacular. When music comes up in conversation it is normally talking to people who know my favorite band or about popular artists. Because I regard myself as "a big fan of music" I do occasionally attract people who... erm... do not see it so. They tell me about certain "obscure bands" they like and I must admit I have feigned ignorance a lot of times. I watch carefully how they deal with me and start asking questions and see how they answer them. I'm entertained by watching peoples reactions to things 😄

I play the ditz and get recommended albums and artists or take recommendations when two or more people start talking to themselves about their obscure Japanese and indie albums when they get tied of telling me what to listen. 🤣

Most of the time though... I talk about popular bands and artists, be agreeable and have fun.

my friends generally have good taste in music, actually. they all have their genres they lean to, whether it be indie pop or southern rock or rap or whatever, but most of them are pretty eclectic, too. i still think my taste is the best of my friends ( 😎 ) but many of them could make a compelling case against me.

I'd say I have very few (2-3) close friends with whom I share recs and similar tastes. Most of my friends like local Texas Country music. Some of which is great, some of which is tolerable, some of which is just as bad as the worst country music in the rest of the genre. Also, alot of my friends are into EDM which i struggle with, and "festival bands" which is great but they enjoy the "festival" aspect much more than the "musical" aspect.

end result = i go to a lot of shows alone.... 🙁
