MrFrogger wrote:

My biggest recomendation would be the Philips that I talked about in my first post, the afore mentioned Sony's do a great job at audio reproduction, but offer nothing fantastic in terms of audio quality, which is why you see many people just using them as refrence monitors . The grados that were talked about a while back are also a grea choice.

I'm not sure how we're defining audio quality, but I believe that the most important characteristics are frequency range and frequency response. The frequency range describes the frequencies that can be reproduced. Humans can hear frequencies from 20Hz to 20kHz, so the frequency range should always include those values. Anything else is overkill, anything less and we risk missing frequencies that may be audible on another system.

Even more important than the frequency range is the frequency response. The frequency response describes how the headphones will boost or cut certain frequencies. In a studio situation, a flat response is ideal because we can boost or cut whichever frequencies to obtain the sound we desire; however, I believe that it's also the ideal listener experience. We want to hear the music as it was recorded. Studio monitors provide the flattest response, but some headphones come close.

For the price range, the best of the best are the Sony MDR7506 and the Grado SR 60i. Here is a graph depicting the frequency responses for these headphones.

If you want to hear the sound as it was intended, buy the Sony MDR7506 headphones. They're professional studio standard and they typically run less than $100. Beats will boost frequencies in the lower end, which is fine if you like bass, but you're not getting an accurate portrayal of the recording.

Lol, nothing ruins a day like the wires snapping off your headphones. I like to think that fixing my headphones is the reason why I learned how to solder... totally more useful than soldering processor boards.

I only like over-the-ear style headphones. My gawd are earbuds uncomfortable!

I currently use $20 Sony MDR-ZX100. Their quality / cost ratio is quite high.

I'm thinking of upgrading to Sennheiser headphones soon. Unless... does anyone has better recommendations than Sennheisers?

Pitchfork didn't really need any more help in being pretentious and condescending.

Anyway, at home and when playing drums I use Sennheiser HD 212 Pro's. They're about six years old, but they still work wonderfully- notably I find they are outstanding for vocals, for some reason. When out and about I usually just use the standard Apple headphones.
