The way points are calculated for year charts is that they are awarded points in relation to how far during the year the chart was updated. This is not new and the algorithm hasn't been changed.

From the 'how it works' page:

"If a year or decade chart was last updated before the relevant time period had completed, the elapsed number of days that had passed when the chart was updated, are taken into consideration when calculating the points."

As the top album in a year chart is only worth 5 points, then the top album is currently worth less than a point. As the year progresses, the chart should start become more meaningful.

The main purpose is to stop albums released in the first part of the year having an unfair advantage over those that are released in the latter part (otherwise albums that have been released longer will likely appear in more charts & accumulate more points purely because they have been released longer and not because they are any better than album released more recently). This also goes some way to resolving the issue of charts created in January/February/March which are not updated *at all* afterwards, therefore not taking into account albums released during the whole year (a year chart updated in December will be worth more points than a year chart last updated in February of the same year).

It appears that no 2014 charts count yet. Not sure if i'm right. the points are coming from being in decade or overall charts, which explains why Against Me is at #1 since Outlaw has it at #1 on his overall chart.

Hello!

Looking at the BEA page for Wig Out at Jagbags by Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks (released early January), I've noticed that it had 4 points, coming from nowhere. For each chart it is listed in, the album gets 0 point (why? it's been released alright), adding to a surprising 4 pts overall.

So, my questions:

- can't an album from 2014 get points yet even if it's already been released?
- where do these 4 points come from?

That's absolutely correct.

Also, there is no plan to retrospectively update existing albums with historical release dates as I don't think it will add much value to the site for the arguing effort that would be involved.

I think the system is to use the first official release date, no matter where it is as long as it's officially released. May be wrong on that thought though.

This will allow albums to be future dated, so that once the release date is reached they can be unflagged and re-verified to ensure the leaked artwork/track listing corresponds with the initial full release. Please don't add albums that have not been released yet. It creates headaches for those who are doing the data moderation, and it's frustrating to have to flag albums for deletion because they don't officially exist.

Digital releases are fine, so long as they are official and are available to download now and not just on pre-order (also noting obviously that some releases do not have a physical release so digital releases are perfectly legitimate).

Spotify is a strange case as they are streaming the album to you, and you are unable to purchase it ( https://support.spotify.com/uk/learn-more/faq/#!/article/Changes-to-the-Download-store ). For that reason, I don't think a Spotify release should count as the official release date for an album unless it is legally available for download/purchase (an iTunes or Amazon release would be different).

Only the original version of each official release is used on BEA. Leaked releases can get pulled, or be changed, before they are officially released so it would have to be modified afterwards if it's wrong, and if it never gets released for some reason, we'd never know when to delete it and would have an invalid item on the system. The same rule applies to all releases, so not just this one.
