Jake Bugg is very good and has the potential to just keep getting better... but at this point he doesn't have the legacy that Curtis Mayfield has. Mayfield for now.

Fixed. Ridiculously easy decision. Now that Bush is out, I'd be OK with Mayfield winning the whole thing to be fair.

He also wrote most of the material for Baby Huey's posthumous debut (thanks Norman), so the guy is literally responsible for my two favorite soul/funk records of all time.

Getting huge Bob Dylan vibes from the album I got. If Lightening Bolt had been released in the 60s it would be a classic today. There is a second album I haven't heard yet though.

In Curtis, Roots, There's No Place Like America Today, Curtis/Live! and, of course, Superfly, Curtis Mayfield contributed more to soul, funk and popular music in general than most artists ever come close to managing. I also urge anybody who enjoys those records to check out Back to the World and Short Eyes as well (not to mention as much as you possibly can by The Impressions). Anyway, Curtis was the greatest, a fantastic guitarist, a unique and instantly recognisable vocalist, and a supremely talented composer and lyricist who was equally at home writing biting social commentary, feel-good summertime anthems and the most beautiful, sincere love songs imaginable. I'll let the music speak for itself:
