It has some nice moments, but a lot of the prettiness seems contrived, like corny ballads trying to be mysterious and arty because they smother themselves with strings and lots of droning ambience. It seems manipulative and forced. Post rock in general often bugs me these days though...

I thought he meant garbage as in popular music in general, not the band Garbage.

But still, Sigur Ros is debatably in the top 100 most popular bands. They have nearly 2 million listeners on last.fm, a number that far exceeds, say, Lana Del Ray.

I don't think it is boring, it is undeniably pretty, and I used to be into it more than I am now, but mostly...well, I've kind of got two extremes to the music I like - the kind that evokes imagery or emotions and the kind that is catchy and fun. This is too much in the middle to be a favourite...I don't like to try to define what music I like but that tends to be the case anyways.

Really adore this album, I don't really understand why people think it's boring, there are some really sweepingly gorgeous melodies on here. I guess we're all just wired differently.

The ending of this song is some of the most frisson filled mayhem I've heard, far from boring.

This is in my top 25 or something, but for some reason I've never been able to get into other Sigur Rós records. I'd literally take a single track from here (apart from the opening and closing ones) over their entire discography bar AB. I just think they've found the perfect balance between the melodic and catchy aspects of their music, and the atmospheric and ambient ones, here. The soundscapes are beautiful, but I think we can truly talk about songwriting here. This is like the limit between pop and ambient. Well that's how it feels to me. So yeah, great. Their other works aren't nearly as catchy nor as sonically powerful.

Oh my god this album is gorgeous. It's in my top 100, one of my favorite post-rock albums. You talk about soundscapes, this is exactly that.
