Accoring to the British Theft Act of 1968:

"A person is guilty of theft, if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it".

The argument from the offender in this case may very well, and from a philosophical point of view rightly, be that he is not depriving anyone of anything. But, says the record company, he deprived us of the revenue we would have made if he had not taken it. No, says the illegal downloader, if I could not have gotten it for free I would have done without. And in many cases this holds true, people today listen to vastly more music than when I grew up and your only alternatives were to buy the record, borrow it from someone else who bought it, or record it off of the radio.

Not saying that it is right to steal here, I don't think it is, but I have little sympathy with people screaming for aid when they have happily charged extortionist prices while they could.

It seems that it's OK to download music illegally for whatever reason e.g. poverty ($6.99 - really?), 'testing some new album' etc).

It leaves the artists with a problem of how to get paid, particularly a problem if your music doesn't lend itself to live performance (the other obvious potential source of $$) (e.g. electronica and other genres where the music is produced in a studio).

Music piracy is pretty much invulnerable to any counter-measure and far too difficult to police effectively. If everyone ends up stealing their music, it will surely harm the industry as a whole and I'm not sure there is anything that can be done about it by the artists (I'm not talking publishers as these are almost redundant now).

I honestly don't think file sharing is "killing" the industry or new bands as much as record companies try to tell us it is. To be honest in reference to new artists yes I think it's likely when they first start about 60-70% of people who listen to their album have done so illegally but really what this does is give them massive exposure. The more they are talked about on the net, the more they get to tour. I can't imagine that before the digital age anyone at my age could have listened to as many albums as I have by now. So in a way illegal downloading means we give bands more of a chance than we would if we had to shell out money which really most of us can't afford to basically 'gamble' on, which is essentially what we would be doing if buying music we've never heard. So really in a way illegal downloading increases the chances tenfold for new artists to get off the ground.

Having said all that there does need to be a balance for music listeners. I have never paid for an mp3 (unless you count free downloads with physical purchases, King Of Limbs, The Suburbs etc) I feel like I'm getting nothing for my money really, but as I said before I have quite the decent collection of physical music (does that sound right 😕 ?) . So even the poorest person should be able to buy an album every couple of months (especially if they are able to afford the internet connection upon which to download the albums.
However, I can see physical media completely dying out and streaming services becoming the norm once they extend their content offerings to cover off the remaining gaps in their catalogues. Why own something if you can play any track you want on demand?

I think this is why Spotify has done well. It gives people a great service for nothing. A lot of people near me just use Spotify (free version supported by ads) and torrents. You can see why life is a bit tougher for modern artists.

I agree with you about CD's being more tangible. I'm a CD person also. I don't mind paying for my music. It's one of the few things that I buy where I feel I got my monies worth, and then some. IMO the free music is hurting the artists ability to make a living and forces them to tour more and charge outragious prices for a concert. I used to be able to see a top notch band near the stage for like $40. That same ticket today would cost me $350. When the Beatles stopped touring live they were able to focus on the music more and had more time to be creative. I don't think an artist has that luxury these days.

Bands/artists dont get their big money from selling albums but from touring, so even illegal dowloading is suporting them in a way(not very nice but still).

I'd say about 80% of music i download (legally), 10% i acquire from mates (usually in the form of "have you heard this album - here's some mp3's) and the last 10% actually buying cd's.

I find having mp3's the best, as i can keep it all on a hard-drive, swapping it between computers/ipods and takes up hardly any physical space. (i'm not sure how many albums i've actually got, but I do know I've got around 300-350 gig of music on my harddrive.

I used to have a huge collection of 1000 or so cds, but they were a nightmare when i moved house, and i'd spend anything up to 30 minutes looking for a particular cd. I like the fact that if i want to listen to a particular song or album, i can go straight to it. I'm also loving having itunes on shuffle at work and having a vast selection of types of music to listen to.
Generally nowadays i'll only buy a cd if the album is in my top 20 and want a physical copy. I also started doing the same with vinyl - buying my all-time favourite albums, but stopped when i got to 50 or so - again for space issues.

As for finding new music, i find forums like this useful, Spotify is good, and i also check out the 'Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section on Amazon
