Yeah true, he is definitely a meme as well as an artist. It's just that many people on both sides of the argument (in this case Goodsir, who appears to be "ironically" supporting Lil B despite knowing very little of his music, and benpaco, who earlier dismissed Lil B as a poor joke before backtracking) think of him as a meme first, and that's genuinely insulting. Yes, the internet has been the major factor in his rise in popularity, with people all over the world able to joke about this guy whose seemingly non-existent flow and apparently unending positivity (and the inevitable contradictions that come with that) and totally erratic, often utterly overwhelming attitude to releasing new music make him a total one-off in popular music, but I think many people fail to recognise the complete sincerity which goes into everything he releases. He's like a hip-hop Daniel Johnston, an artist whose technical shortcomings often put people off or lead to these "joke" accusations but whose music and message comes from somewhere so real that anybody who actually listened to him would find it hard to deny. Geevy already gave a great list of reasons as to why Lil B is an amazing artist with a singular vision, and his influence on hip-hop in the last few years has been widespread and undeniable. He's a true trailblazer, and to be honest I prefer his music to Tim Buckley's. I understand that Lil B can often come across as a joke, and that fifteen-year-olds diving headfirst into (what is ostensibly) a meme with cringeworthy abandon is an unavoidable part of being on the internet in 2014, not to mention that genuine fans of the Based God can occasionally make it seem as though our support is somehow insincere or ironic (a consequence of our enthusiasm towards him and his own reputation), but if people here actually took the time to listen to 6Kiss or I'm Gay or God's Father or Illusions of Grandeur then they'd realise that there is far more to him than "swag" and some admittedly hilarious tweets about treating every one of god's creatures as equal or showing the world how "Based" you feel today or about how fantastic and world-changing his own music is, as though he's been asked to pen his own press-release that pitches him somewhere between Tupac, The Beatles, the entire cast of Live Aid and an actual deity. But if those tweets and other short snippets of meme-worthy behaviour or lyrics are all you have to go on, it's not really your place to comment on him as an artist, ironically or otherwise.

Will be checking out one of his albums tomorrow, then. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Cheers.

I don't agree with everything here, but again, in the end, it boils down to this. I'm glad you do. I don't, personally. As long as people here are voting for real, again, awesome. I won't deny he does some interesting things - he's not my favorite in the rap world, mind you, but some interesting things, and I'd understand why someone might like it.
It really bothers me that people think Lil B is a joke, I understand it (heck I even partially felt the same at one stage), but i'm pretty sure the majority who say it have never listened to a B tape. If you had you would at the every least understand he is being sincere, putting his all into his music, constantly challenging popular music conventions and creating a body of work that is as varied that it is spontaneous. With the majority of artists you see a small, yet frequent change in their sound over the course of a few albums, often spanning years. You can see him change constantly, it's remarkable and can look at it in so many different ways that other artists simply don't allow. He's funny, with a worldview that is truly admirable, with one of the best ears for beats ever, truly a game changer and will go down with the greats.

... and of course he respects innocent little animals, but only Geevy owns SWAG

From what Ive heard of Lil B ive geniunely liked, he is truly never dull, but I gotta go all Buckley on this one, sorry coolerm8thanI

Lil B is definitely half meme. I had a friend-ish thing who always used to say "Thank you based god" but he didn't know who Lil B was. 😕 Kind of odd, kind of annoying. Otherwise I think it is a lot of fun, the whole meme, haven't listened to his music yet, haven't gotten the inclination to, but it may come sometime, so don't get your panties in a bunch.
Used to be really really into Starsailor and Lorca. Stopped listening to Starsailor. Still listened to Lorca. Stopped listening to Lorca. Much later I got into Hello & Goodbye, but eventually I found it sort of cheesy and stopped listening to it. Tim Buckley apparently doesn't have much staying power with me.

Yeah, the current score makes me feel better at the site. If you think Lil B's better, vote for him, nothing wrong with that. Just tired of circlejerkiness and I'm glad it legitimately seems we're moving on from that, at the very least on this thread.

I'm gonna be totally honest, he's not that bad. I like that he sounds a little different from everything else that's out there. My vote would go to Buckley even if it wasn't such a BasedGod circlejerk around here, but it bothers me how much people get into it. Less that I'm tired of Lil B getting discussed and more that I'm tired of people just joking about it, just voting for him because its him and they may not even know his music.

Great post and I agree completely.
The amount of ironic hyperbolic posts about Lil B (recent example seen in the "coolest user chart ever" treat) is certainly not helping his case. But honestly if anyone would just look past the memes, look past the silly "bitch on my dick cuz I look like >insert celebrity here<" songs and take their time to get familiar with his body of work, maybe we would have less people that treat Lil B as a joke.
Personally I'd recommend "God's Father", "The Silent President Mixtape" and "I'm Gay" as starting points for some of his more serious albums.
This is currently my fav Lil B song:

Link

While he is not the most technical rapper, he has an unique flow that just works for what he is doing. It's as if the beat were just tailor made for his style. Good stuff!
