Definitely. Seems like a lot of work for one person with little payoff.

And about the vastness; Istanbul is actually not a city, it's like a whole country of its own (more than three times the size of London and I think you would know that London is not exactly small). Getting used to subway is easy and much faster way of going to places if you don't wanna take a walk which in first place is a strategic mistake itself unless the place you want to go is very far. You should've told me before going so I could give you a few tips (like those cheeky shop owners and restaurants and stuff happens in conventional touristy places and Taksım so you should stay away from those places)

Certainly very different cultures.

I'm afraid we only did the obvious sight-seeing - Blue Mosc, Topkapı Palace, Grand/Spice Bazaar etc.
Even then it was hard to fit those things into just two days, and our time there was very planned out so we could do everything we could. I'd love to go again, and if I ever do, I'll make sure to follow some of your tips - I'd forgotten I was in contact with someone from Turkey. I hate touristy places, and we made a conscious effort to explore some streets away from the sights, especially when shopping or dining - sometimes it's hard to know where to go otherwise.

Really cool city though, lots going on - especially in the bazaar. Loved having guys with food on wagons in every street corner. It had a very 'sell sell sell' vibe which had it's ups and downs - we came across a lot of really funny shop owners who cheekily try to sell you more, but I could have done without being harassed to eat at every restaurant I walked passed.

I dunno if anything kicked off, but there were a ridiculous number of police in the city on Republic Day. Every time I looked down an avenue it was full of about 20 policemen.

Would have loved to stay longer, the city seemed so vast it would have been hard to see everything in such a short time, but we did the essentials, I think.
