If you remove the 90's angst it's Jim Morrison, but that's just my opinion.
Anyway, great find! And I don't seem to be the only one who thinks so 😉
I'd heard Doors comparisons to a bit of the guys other group Wovenhand, but never 16 Horsepower before. The connection surprised me, but you're kinda right (except the vocal timbre seems very different to me). Especially the slide guitar, its just a bit grittier/more distorted. Critics usually pull "gothic" comparisons, which works a bit, but I never saw the songwriting as quite self-conciously "spooky" enough to fit that label really cleanly.

😁
What reminds you of the Doors though?

Anyways...best album ever. The songwriting works with folk/country norms in a creative way, lots of tense minor chords, some neat syncopated rhythms, and the guitar/banjo have a cool spooked out, almost skeletal sound to them. And it all works around David Eugene Edwards' impassioned charismatic voice. I don't know how to describe it but the way he phrases things is just fascinating. Probably my favourite lyrics ever too. Something about the mix of religious passion and ambiguously violent imagery that just connects with my silly brain. How could you not love lines like this:

O I will forgive your wrongs
Yes I am able
An for my own I feel great shame
I would offer up a brick to the back of your head boy
If I were Cain

Its tempting to quote the entire album.

Many thanks to Meccalecca for his Folklore chart; which was the catalyst for me getting into these guys.
