"Alladin and his lamp sits with utopian hermit monks side-saddle on the golden calf"

#1. Bringing It All Back Home
#2. Highway 61
#3. Blonde on Blonde
#4. w/ The Band "The Basement Tapes"
#5. Modern Times

Have you noticed how Bringing It All Back Home alternates between rock and acoustic songs for the first 5 tracks? It's almost perfect one-to-one overall with acoustic songs slightly edging due to the ending.

The moment he laughs in his 115th Dream is so great. I like to think he just realized how amazing "I was riding on the Mayflower when I thought I spotted to land" is as a first line to a song. The imagery and themes in this song rivals most classic novels, and indeed parodies a few.

Maybe people have opinions on The Basement Tapes. I love the looseness and informality. Some songs are brilliant, others endearing and silly. "Well that big dumb blonde with her wheel gorged, turtle that friend of hers with his checks all forged, and his cheeks in a chunk with his cheese in the cash..." WTF?

Modern Times, Dylan's 32nd studio release, has an interesting story. It involves piracy of a poet, Henry Timrod. "Borrowed" lines. Can Dylan, in all his unique poetic glory, ever be accused of plagiarism?

No Naples. You weren't supposed to copy the chart positions. The question was what your opinion is.

I didn't copy the chart ranks but the order is the same. Here are my ranks vs overall chart:

1. Highway 61 Revisited 12 vs 15
2. Blonde on Blonde 17 vs 22
3. Blood On The Tracks 23 vs 34
4. Bringing It All Back Home 59 vs 76
5. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan 223 vs 174

                          For me it goes:

1. Blood on the Tracks
2. Bringing It All Back Home
3. Highway 61 Revisited
4. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
5. Blonde on Blonde

I'd actually agree with App that Blood has some filler, but I think that the rest of the album is spectacular enough to make up for it.

Here's how the albums rank on the chart currently. This, naturally, may not be the same results as the outcome of a poll on it as people without Dylan on their top 50 might want a say as well.

#15 Highway 61 Revisited (365 charts/413 favorites)

Dylan is one of the all time greatest without a doubt and most of his catalogue still holds up very well for both interesting listen and just plain good rock music. It's not an easy task to pick one favorite but I would have to go with the following choices:

1. Blood on the Tracks
This kind of just sounds like Bob standing up there playing the stuff the way he happens to feel like it at that instant and although it has been criticized for being monotonous I have never had that experience. Greatest tracks include Tangled Up in Blue and Lily, Rosemary & the Jack of Heart, but every single song seems to be right. #18 of all albums.

2. Highway 61 Revisited
Electric rock & roll Dylan at his best. The title track is the pick of choice but this is again a case of an album without weak tracks. Mike Bloomfield's guitar work on Tombstone Blues would have been worth the price of admission on its own. #35 of all albums.

3. Nashville Skyline
Finally some praise for an album that is often neglected, maybe because it sticks out too much from his usual stuff. He had tangled with country before on John Wesley Harding but on this one it all comes together. No weak tracks here either but the duet with Johnny Cash on Girl from the North Country stick out, as does the rollicking Country Pie. It takes a while to get used to Bob's voice. #49 of all albums.

I haven't heard them all, but I've heard all the ones up to Blood on the tracks and thats my favourite. i find it more melodic and more pleasantly sung (!) by dylan. i saw bob perform last year and he played idiot wind one of my favourites from him, loved it. and that album is closely followed by 'freewheeling' (blowing in the wind, masters of war, hard rains gonna fall..need i say more?)

I'd hate to sound cliche, but I've always liked Highway 61 the best. Blood on the Tracks has some amazing moments, too, but I personally find that to have too much filler. Highway 61 was WWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Ahead of it's time in songwriting, and it's just a perfect album.

I don't remember a thread devoted to Bob Dylan in the past. Anyways, the purpose of this thread is to talk about your favorite Dylan album or if you prefer, the one you think is his best.

I'll start. For me, Bringing it All Back Home is the best. Here's why: First there's the obvious classics- Subterranean Homesick Blues, Maggie's Farm, Mr. Tambourine Man, and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. Then there's lesser known gems: She Belongs to Me, Love Minus Zero= No Limit (I never understood that title), Gates of Eden, and one of my all-time favorite Dylan songs, It's Alright Ma, (I'm Only Bleeding). There are poetic, beautiful and meaningful songs. Then there are whimsical, funny songs like On the Road Again and another personal favorite, Bob Dylan's 115th Dream (Listen to the whole story. It's hilarious!) It has an even balance of acoustic and electric songs that makes for a great variety. It has both a killer opener and a phenomenal closer, which all great albums should have. The songs are great, the playing is great, and of course, the lyrics are great. Here's just one example: "In ceremonies of the horsemen, even the pawn must hold a grudge." I don't know what that means, but it sounds so fucking cool. That's just one amazing line. There are so many on this album.

How about you? What's your favorite Dylan album? Tell what you like about it.
