Oh, you should definitely check out Seeds by Georgia Anne Muldrow. It's produced entirely by Madlib. Real dope.

R&B and, apparently, neo-soul (okay maybe just Erykah Badu but I'll listen to other artists under the umbrella, maybe I'll do some plain old soul listening too)! I'm sort of picky with it (that's not new though) but so far I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
As well as old favourites, especially Orion Rigel Dommisse. ^_^

Haven't gotten to Lichens yet, but I look forward to it.

Thrill Jockey is another favorite of mine. I'm familiar or somewhat familiar with Tortoise, Oval, Califone, Sea and Cake, Mouse on Mars, Fiery Furnaces, Wooden Shjips, and Boredoms releases on the label, and I've been meaning to check out Freakwater. Any favorites you've got outside of those?

Kranky is pretty great. Lichens put out some interesting records on Kranky. You could also probably spend years going through Thrill Jockey's discog.

Picked up Tortoise's "Why We Fight"/"Whitewater" 7" some time ago, and then just last Sunday I picked up To Rococo Rot + D's "Smaller Listening"/"Numbers in Love" 7" and noticed they were both on the same label, Soul Static Sound. I checked it out and the label released rarities from Tortoise, To Rococo Rot, Tarwater, Ganger, UI, and others for a few years before going down. It really impressed me so I've been hunting those down digitally and I'm keeping an eye out about town for the other records. Along the same lines, I've been listening to remixes done of or by these and similar groups, like Oval's remixes of Tortoise, or Mouse on Mars' of Oval, or Autechre's of Tortoise, and so on. The whole 'scene' is pretty incestuous and I'm trying to uncover the links.

I also just exchanged a couple handfuls of recs with joyofdivision and he gave me several turntablism (at least what I've listened to so far) records, including 2 Many DJs (which I've been meaning to listen to forever, so thank you), some DJ Kicks stuff, Headz, Rephlexions, Strictly Turntablized, and Triangle Folds. I'm familiarizing myself with those and will likely start digging into the Mo' Wax label more.

I'm also working my way backwards through the Kranky Records catalogue. So far I've only gotten through 2014-2010, but I'm slowly progressing.

So I guess I'm mostly letting labels guide me right now.

Mostly obsessed with Tortoise and To Rococo Rot right now.

EDIT: Oh, and because I plan on attending Texas Psych Fest, every now and then I spend a day listening to things from the bands that will be there, particularly ones that released albums recently. I gave Loop and Bardo Pond both a try for the first time since they're in the lineup; very glad I did.

I'm in a fantastic limbo right now of not having any direction after going through a Kozelek phase. I'm hoping something fresh comes along to help soundtrack the next coming months, but I'm enjoying listening to anything and everything at the moment.

- Dernière Volonté - neofolk/martial industrial from France

- Tuonela - Aus ambient/experimental artist - trawling through the back catalogue

- Nurse With Wound - since Current 93 and Sol Invictus are also on my radar, this was inevitable.

I don't know what you have/haven't heard but for Dark ambient things maybe try:

Zoat Aon - Star Autopsy
elegi - Sistereis
current 93 - Nature Unveiled
Formication - Pieces for a Condemned Piano
Lustmord - the place where the black stars hang
2nd half of trist's hin-fort (1st half is ambient black metal)
Coil - Musick to play in the Dark
time machines - Time Machines

Some of those (coil, current 93) may also have some loosely comparable attitudes to Swans on their other albums. For stuff similar to noisy 80's swans Godflesh and Neurosis would be the obvious picks.

I also have a custom chart of dark/ugly music and comparable stuff

You should check out This Disgrace by Art of Burning Water, sort of like Swans meet Melvins in a barbecue pit.
