what a wonderful idea ! Is This It is gonna make a perfect subject, i think that it got enough maturity after 10 years, and still sound so fresh and exciting, and your class will like that.

my friends opened a youth arts cafe in town and i volunteered to help her out. i wanted to lead music groups like album club and every sunday we'll be doing a music circle where musicians and songwriters can come along to chat and jam. kids cant say theyve got nothing to do! haha

Also, I think OK Computer would make a great introduction. The themes are pretty universal but you can go as deep into it as you want, or take as specific an angle as you want.

By the way, are you focusing more on themes and cultural significance than on composition and such? I think you need a jazz album in there either way.

Damn it, I hate this politically correct society! Why can't the kids watch Quadrophenia at 13/14? It never did me any harm. Just leave the DVD on in the background and walk out the room... 😈

Thanks. Although I originally wondered whether kids that age listen to albums, I'm kind of into the idea now. Here's another one:

OK Computer--You could use the album to explore the downside of technology and progress. This generation is so immersed in technology, their sense of identity is bound up with it. I bet you few of them have ever wondered if there might be a downside for humanity when it comes to technology and our fast moving world. The album asks these kinds of questions, and so could you.

Oooh! You could use No Surprises to teach situational irony. (Ask them if they would really want a world with no alarms and no surprises) Ask them if they have ever had an experience or felt like the narrator in Climbing up the Walls. There's no end to it.

That may be true, but when teaching kids, it's always good to err on the side of safety. You don't want to take the chance of getting an earful from a parent or supervisor who got an earful from a parent.

I would suggest Quadrophenia. It's all about the struggle for identity and adolescent angst and confusion. It has a story and it comes with a picture book and there's even a movie although it might be a little inappropriate. I bet kids would find the history of mods and rockers in the 60's pretty interesting. Shit! you could explore all kinds of youth and counterculture movements and compare them to teenage styles and identities today. Man! I could go to town with this idea. I want to meet with them!

I'll let you into a secret: Many kids that age are already spliffing behind the bike shed, or having encounters with the opposite sex. I'm sure the story can be told in a nice way 😉

thats actually a really good idea. If they start thinking about this music deeply they might realise how worthless it is.
