Rush is probably the biggest cult band of all time. They had a definitive cult following, especially in the 70's. Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage is an excellent documentary that primarily looks at the fans of the band and the "cult" idea of the band.

King Crimson fans can be pretty loony. I speak from experience, being a loony King Crimson fan :P.

Lots of people go apeshit for anything involved with Mike Patton, too-his cult following is one of the weirdest in music.

It's pretty easy for a group of people to attach to an artist. The ones that get made fun of though are the fuckers who defend this indie band who made one good album to the death (mentioned each time above).

"Cult" isn't synonymous with "indie"; many cult bands get at least some mainstream success. However, I think it's safe to say that the majority of cult bands are relatively unknown outside their respective circles.
