Agreed and understood.. But, nonetheless, this is a discussion amongst members of this site. And when you're having a discussion amongst members of this site, it's safe to assume that a 17 year old album that said member group has agreed upon to be the best off all time is a "classic".
Yeah I guess but we're just a group of people who like making lists and have similar tastes. Let's be real here for a moment, our top 20 includes In Rainbows. We're a little skewed towards Radiohead. Other things come from us having specific tastes. Loveless and Suburbs, while both great and critically acclaimed albums, don't really show up in the top 50 outside of music forums like this. Yankee Foxtrot Hotel and others are in our top chunk, but they really wouldn't be outside of an environment like this. In fact, I'd say a majority of people around me have never of Wilco. Soft Bulletin and Illinoise are both a little strange as well. And to have such Classics as James Taylor, Chicago, and many others nowhere near the top 1000 even is quite strange.

We're a specific community, and while I love this community, it is quite specific.

I've played it on its' own several times. I love it. It does of course help that it is essential to the articulation of the anti-consumerism/forebodings of the 21st century message that permeates OK Computer, but on its' own I just really think it was a unique, really cool approach.
It would be tough to suggest that the #1 album of all-time, as voted upon by the esteemed users here at BEA, would not have classic status.

Also, it was released 17 years ago. saying it's not old enough to have classic status right now would be like saying Born to Run or Dark Side of the Moon weren't old enough to be considered classics in 1990. weird, right? I know.

                          OK Computer

1. Karma Police
2. No Surprises
3. Lucky
4. The Tourist
5. Exit Music

I know they aren't the obvious choices (apart from Karma) but they are my favourites.

Dark Side of the Moon

1. Time
2. Us and Them
3. The Great gig in the Sky
4. Brain Damage
5. Eclipse

These are generally the top rated tracks apart from Money, which I find a good song but it doesn't fit for me in the general tone of the album.

Well, culture is a pretty big deal isn't it. What's the 60s without the hippies and the 80s without hilarious hair styles. As much as the music needs to be remembers, the other parts of the culture shouldn't be forgotten, they create an atmosphere and context to appreciate these old artifacts

Classics need to be timeless. I'm sure a lot of albums that sounded great in their time have dated poorly, and it's hard to tell which albums we listen to today will sound aged in ten or twenty years.

Classics may well be propaganda, and if it is, it's the fact that it's still propaganda that makes it a classic.

If in 10 years time society decides OK Computer has aged poorly, will it lose classic status? What about Revolver? How many people need to agree that it has aged well or not?
It's like... you can't make a 12 year old Whiskey in a day.

It's weird you say this, I was going to say it should be a 12 or 13 year time period for an album to be a classic ... 😲

IMO, Is This It is a classic by now. Grace, In Utero, ITAOTS, Mellon Collie, The Blue Album, Illmatic, Soft Bulletin, Wu Tang, Californication, Play, Either/Or, Stankonia, Sublime, Reasonable Doubt, The Bends, and OK Computer are classics by now. I think my cutoff is 2001. But here's a weird idea:

I don't remember 2001 and before it. I can remember some music released from 2002 on, I remember having heard it on the radio when it was new. Can't say that about anything 2001 or before. So what if we each draw the line internally and personally as albums we can't remember being without? Does that make any sense?

EDIT: I'll probably pick at least a few of these to do lists of later, too.
