Extremely surprised at Saltillo leading this fight. Their album sounded totally predictable to me, not wholly personal to say the least (Craig Armstrong meets Sigur Ros meeting soft-Aphex meet overheard samples meet new age mock-native chants etc.), and frankly I'm wondering if it wasn't outdated immediately upon release - despite a recent trip-hop/downtempo revival/revamp of sorts). I'm mostly bored tbh.

On the other hand, King of da Playaz Ball is solid, if a bit long maybe, fun album and the least you could say is it hasn't aged one bit. Some excellent tracks in there too. Easy win.

What do you hear in Ganglion that I don't?

I think Ganglion resonates more with me given how I felt as texture after texture hit me. Almost transcendent of the genre at times and very delightful to listen to.

I'll probably end up revisiting it at a later date, since people who's opinions I respect seem to greatly enjoy it. Oh well, you can't like everything.

As a certified BAWP of good standing, I thought for sure my genre prejudices would make short work of King of Da Playaz, and I could carry on with my BAWPish compulsion to obsessively rank ANYTHING (in this case Neil Young's canon). But ironically enough, likely because I don't listen to enough hip-hop, King of Da Playaz sounded incredibly FRESH and fun. Totally took me back to being young & dumb back in the 90s so maybe there's a touch of nostalgia going on as well. Regardless, I can totally see myself throwing it on at my next pre-party.

Meanwhile, Saltillo's Ganglion, despite being an interesting amalgam of drum n' bass, post-rock, and anthemic rock, left me a little underwhelmed. Like I'd kind of heard all the parts done better before by other bands. Perhaps, I just need more time with it. But, MUST GET BACK TO LIST. COMPULSION TOO STRONG.

Neither were incredibly pleasing, but I remember King of Da Playaz Ball having some great moments, and Ganglion having very draining moments. Vote to Da Playaz Ball.

Ganglion is one of the best constructed trip hop albums you could possibly hear. I do notice that it's not quite as perfect as I've convinced myself it to be as the issue has come up that it feels forced at times (in the sense that it trades sounding cool for the extremely well constructed piece it is at some points), but I'd recommend it for anyone interested in trip hop alongside classics such as Emancipator, Dolphin (Russian musician who also does experimental music), Bows, etc. Honestly, it's quite a brilliant album, everyone should listen to it.

The opponent was meh.

Skinny Pimp, easily. One of my three favourites in the whole tournament, and the one I've listened to most in the past six months. The best Memphis rap album I've ever heard, and it would be a shame for the tournament's sole hip-hop representative to go out at this stage, especially considering how great it is. Funky yet sinister.
