Finally listened to this.

The atmosphere this album created was incredible. Super creepy, weird, really well done. Unfortunately, the album drags a little. I get that their going for an ambient kind of thing, but it just went on a little too long with not enough variety for me. Production was awesome, composition, not as much. A decent album.

I only listened to part of it (like, less than half of the first song) but it gave me the impression I was wandering through an active construction site while on hallucinogens so that the construction workers looked and sounded like demons. Yeah, I dunno...

It's alright. Less metal-y than I expected. Maybe that's a good thing, at least for me. I would agree that the first track could use some progression, but again that's just me, I'm not too much into drone either. The mood it created was still pretty dark and intense. Second track.. I did not know what to think about, but ok.. Erm... Yeah... Not sure I'll listen to it again though..

Was listening to this yesterday, but got pulled outside by a friend in town. Gonna return to it today hopefully. Not exactly what I was expecting, far more atmospheric. The first track had some cool aesthetics but seemed to go nowhere. For a 36 minute epic, I'd expect a bit more progression to the track.

So this album is odd...

First track, despite going on forever and ever, and having some horrible plodding drums, has actually got really neat hypnotic ambience and cool sounds.

The second track is kind of a mess? I can't tell what its supposed to be...ambient, drone, metal? Its just odd.

Well apart from the one here (which i think you might like) here are some that are very good for black metal

And the Light Swallowed Everything by Seirom - one of Gnaw Their Tongues' many aliases this is probably the most.. normal. Less intense sound collage and more shimmering ambient. Still black metal influence though. Was a serious contender for this thread actually. Could me my aoty so far but its so close to tell

Plague Beasts by Cloak of Altering - another from GTT. This one is more recognizable

Thrones by Aurvandil - comparable to older stuff like Vinterland, maybe 90s Blut aus Nord

Postsocial by Wold - noisy and chaotic and wonderful

A Clear Path by Cold Body Radiation - I am still not sure if this is blackgaze or not. Not really dark or grotesque which is why I associate the two. More post-rock influenced tho. Post-black metal?

Thirty Five Thoughts to Nineteen Elements by Wheels Within Wheels – from the same part of the States as Panopticon (they’ve done a good split album with them too), he is much noisier than his counterpart. Darkspace inspired for sure.

Groping in a Misty Spread by Basarabian Hills – “Lustre copycats” or so dubbed, I personally think theyre much better. This release is probably more ambient than black metal, but it does have those distant shrieks that tell you it’s part of both. Maybe the most digestible of the bunch in that it is in no way lofi. The production glistens. Synths sound like rain drops.

Funeral by Ghost Bath - super melodramatic black metal. This was my first love of the year and it’s still great. Depressing and beautiful.

Art of Propoganda by Harikari for the Sky –It seems very melodic for what it is, but maybe it’s the black metal version of Isis or Rosetta. The vocals sound more akin to sludge anyway.

There's also a release by ILL Omen that i need to spend more time with. Kind of sounded like current Blut aus Nord if memory serves me. Sorry for the overload but ya its been a good year haha. ill update my chart eventually.

I've had a ridiculously difficult time deciding which album to put here. I figured I should pick a black metal album, and the last few months has probably been the best stretch for bmetal albums this decade. So choosing one was less than easy.

So anyway I picked Even if We Never Existed, which isnt even on BEA because ive been lazy and havent updated my chart in forever. CEU's general sound can basically be described as "space black metal". They lie somewhere in between the likes of Darkspace and Oranssi Pazuzu. Less massive and dense than the former and less psychedelic than the latter. And this newest album is likely their most horrifying album to date. The first track has a kind of Gnaw their Tongues-esque atmosphere where all of these sounds are bouncing off the walls of a confined space. Who knows where those muffled screams are coming from. Sometimes they sound like they’re calling for help, other times you’re unsure if they’re even human. Cattle locked in a slaughterhouse. The second track is a little more blunt. Eerie organs, distant howls; basically the foyer of a haunted mansion. Then comes the sweet serenade. Like trying to find a scent, it entices you to follow. But you know where it’s going..
