To the OP, I have the OPPOSITE problem with my chart. It's not that I don't listen to post-2000's music-I do. And I like a lot of it. But not much of it is what I would consider GREAT when compared to older stuff. You can check out my chart (not posting a link to it) if you like...OR look through some of the decade charts.

Honestly, at 13 my tastes had pretty limited range. I was pretty much exclusively into metal. I find that's fairly typical. It takes time to develop your tastes, but if you keep an open mind you can discover all kinds of stuff you previously never would have listened to. I used to HATE country music...and now I listen to a lot of it.

Another suggestion is to trace back the influences of your favourite artists. If your favourite artists dug these guys....then you probably will too. That's how I became a blues fan.

Half the albums on your chart have negative comments attached to them and you think 90's music in general sucks. Why are you trying so hard to be into music when its clearly not for you? Honestly you just shouldn't listen to albums at all except for the ones by your favourite bands like Phoenix and Vampire Weekend. Just stick to singles and be a casual listener as far as listening to the material of other bands goes. Maybe a greatest hits compilation here and there.

Agree, that's prob the main problem. The risk of a very superficial approach to Music.

Anyway, eyal, some big pop rock bands from the past you may appreciate: The Beatles, The Who, and yeah The Smiths. Each one of these is a great starting point. Good luck. 😁

Technologically, i'm glad i was born when i was to be able to slowly increase my intake of music through CDs and eventually the internets.

Of course, this subject could present its own thread, but i just figured to babble here. Remember, these are only my opinions and i wasn't meaning to say one decade of music is objectively better than any other -- it's just my (narrow?) perspective.

I agree with this, but only to a point. The fact that a teenager today has got access (via Spotify/YouTube/downloads/whatever) to pretty much every worthwhile piece of recorded music since the dawn of time has got to be something to celebrate rather than lament. The main problem is that with so much choice you're not going to dwell on something too long if you don't get it first time around (unless you have a tenacious personality and dearly want to give something like Trout Mask Replica umpteen listens before something clicks).

What is lacking today (at least as far as I can gather) are revolutionary scenes, where music, art and fashion all collide. To be swept up in something, to belong to a movement and be part of a 'happening' - to be given a sense of belonging when you're a spotty and slightly odd teenager desperately wanting to break out of the bedroom ennui of revising for exams. With so much choice of old and new, where do you begin? Forums like this are an absolute godsend if you need inspiration, or at least a steer in a certain direction...

Of course this is all down to the inquisitive mind of the individual listener. Some of us our happy to stay in our pigeon-holes and stick with a certain genre of music (and by proxy those that influenced it). Others like to experiment, open our minds and dive right in to all sorts of wonderments without a thought for what effect it might have on us. Bit like acid, really - except without the flashbacks (unless you have the volume set too high and end up with tinnitus for a week).

Precedent is right though. Every teen needs The Smiths.

Beyond that, it doesn't seem like you actually like the rest of the albums on your list all that much. So I'll stop there. And you know, you could do worse than to listen to the listen to the top 5 albums from each year. You won't like them all, but it'll expose you to some new sounds.

The albums I was listening to at 13 (I think) were Moon and Antarctica, Lonesome Crowded West, There's Nothing Wrong with love, Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts, Figure 8, Diary, - Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over -, Bleed American, etc.

i actually feel bad for anyone growing up today when it comes to enjoyment of the history of pop/rock music. there's just SO MUCH music that's being released TODAY that there's just not enough time to listen to EVERYTHING one might be interested in in the past. there's a whole wealth of good music that predates the 2000s. all you have to do is look around. if you're looking around on BEA, go to BEA's overall chart and just go from 1-to-N. there's plenty of stuff to choose from.
