I think The Who's 60s releases are not only underrated, but also way better than 70s ones. "My Generation", "The Who Sell Out" and "A Quick One" is a fantastic trilogy. While their 70s releases are more redundant and serious, these ones are ironic, funny, and also have a greater historical value.

Actually, I might have called For Sale underrated myself but it is only so when compared to the acclaim the rest of their discography gets. Otherwise it's actually rated as it should be; and the other Beatles albums are overrated.

My perception that those albums are underrated is coming from these acclaimed music chart circles.I should have prefaced that.E.g albums like ITAOTS might be highly rated on here and rym.But it don't have the same recognition outside indie sites. So those early Beatles albums are like the opposite of that.

I like it the best of their late albums, though, so maybe that's what you meant.

I see more discussion of White Pepper than quebec, and I don't consider Shinola to be an album, considering it is an odds-and-sods album.

And if you aren't a Beck fan, that's fine by me. I don't see it as mean-spirited personally, I see it as a load of fun, and as a fan of him I see it the last great album he made. Sea Change was good but highly overrated, Guero was absolute garbage, and the following 3 albums were okay at best.

The massive "Gates to Delirium" suite is a hell of a lot of fun, especially the crazy instrumental section in the middle, which does a fantastic job of conveying the chaos of battle. "Sound Chaser" is a great slice of Yes-brand jazz-fusion, which is not something they've done very often, and "To Be Over" is beautiful - the last few minutes are, to me, a wayward soul's passing into the afterlife, put to music.

Yes (in all meanings). Thank you. Relayer is one of my fav, too, maybe my second after The Yes Album. First of all, is one of their most instrumental, that is a good point for one like me who doesn't like too much Anderson's voice. Also, it keeps a style near to that of King Crimson in the period (Starless and Bible Black, Red), and that's another good point. "Sound Chaser" is my favourite. But i also agree with you about the album ending.

I think this is appropriately lauded - most Beach Boys fans I meet on the Internet consider this one of their favorites from the band, or at the very least a very solid record, but admit that it is eclipsed entirely by what we've managed to get of The Smile Sessions.

Quote:

Beck - Midnite Vultures (I know I'm not the only one who thinks it's his Magnum Opus)

Deserves its place in the dustbins of music history, as far as I'm concerned, but I feel that way about the vast majority of his discography. I think the AllMusic review put it best when it said that it felt more mean-spirited towards the source lexicons Beck was accessing to make it (soul, funk, hip hop, etc.) than homage-y as his former efforts were.

Quote:

Ween - quebec (The most ignored album for sure)

While pretty under-represented in Ween discussions that tend to focus on the band's very early output, I do think Quebec manages more exposure than White Pepper and Shinola, Vol. 1. I like it the best of their late albums, though, so maybe that's what you meant.

I'm stretching the idea of popular as best as I find reasonable

Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets
Husker Du - Candy Apple Grey (If the guitar tone wasn't so sugary I think this would be consistently among top 3 lists)
Beach Boys - Smiley Smile
Chris Bell - I Am The Cosmos (Solo ignored, but everybody name drops Big Star. Alex Chilton is often treated as the star but Cosmos beats everything Chilton did solo, with BS and with Box Tops IMO)
Dinosaur Jr - I Bet On Sky (People seem to treat it as the worst reunion album, I find it much more enjoyable than Bug)
Flaming Lips - Hit To Death In The Future Head (Their 3rd best only to Clouds Taste Metallic and Zaireeka)
Flaming Lips - Zaireeka (Their best)
Guided By Voices - Vampire on Titus
Beck - Midnite Vultures (I know I'm not the only one who thinks it's his Magnum Opus)
Ween - quebec (The most ignored album for sure)
Lo-fi Mountain Goats- Sweden
Hi-fi Mountain Goats - Get Lonely (An album for heartbreak for ages)

Wilco - The Wilco Book bonus CD is rad as fuck. The most experimental Wilco work by far. Shame it got scrapped and released this way, but I still call it the 3rd best Wilco album after YHF and Summerteeth.

Blur - 13, Think Tank, and to a lesser extent The Great Escape - all should be rated higher than Parklife IMO.

Weezer - The Red Album is pretty dumb and yet I've always found it entertaining. Maybe it's because latter-day Rivers is known for being obsessed with being famous and successful in more of a pop-icon way, and yet the Red Album feels like it was made more for the band's enjoyment than anyone else's.

The Flaming Lips - At War With the Mystics is up there with Clouds Taste Metallic and The Soft Bulletin for me. A lot of excellent danceable hits mixed with a healthy dose of mellower tracks.

The Rentals - Not really a popular band as only Return of the Rentals gets the slightest bit of appreciation, but their follow-up Seven More Minutes is incredible and a giant step up from its predecessor.

Nick Drake - Bryter Layter is so good that sometimes I prefer it to Pink Moon.

My Chemical Romance - Also not such a popular band (on this site that is), but I have to say that Danger Days is just one of those great feel-good albums. It has so much energy in it. It still surprises me how much this album can really get me into it.

Venus and Mars is great. I didn't realize it was underrated.

I really like the Schoolboys in Disgrace Album by The Kinks. All their rock opera is stuff is pretty much dismissed by critics....most of it deservedly so. But Schoolboys is a great ode to high school shenanigans and it has some great songs. "No More Looking Back" is the ultimate nostalgic "missing you" song.

I feel like Relayer tends to get overlooked, which is a shame, because it's one of my favorite Yes albums, and in my opinion one of the best they've released.

Similarly, I don't see much mention of The Ladder or Magnification, even though they're both fine albums in their own right. "Homeworld" is pretty famous for being the end-credits song to the game of the same name, but there's other great stuff there too, like "New Language" and "The Messenger". It's possibly the brightest, sunniest record they've ever released, full of a joy and passion that's just infectious, especially in songs like "Lightning Strikes", a song that always makes me smile. Magnification, meanwhile, is essentially a new take on Time and a Word, with the benefit of nearly forty years of musical experience behind it. The tracks are exquisite, beautiful, and powerful all at once, with songs like "Dreamtime" and "Give Love Each Day" (and my personal favorite, "In the Presence of").

Echoing the earlier Kansas talk, I love love love their self-titled debut. The first few songs are pretty good, but it's really the second half of the album where the band really shines; "Journey from Mariabronn" and "Death of Mother Nature Suite" exhibit the band's skill and passion very well, and "Apercu" is my absolute favorite Kansas song; it's very bombastic (which I consider a plus), with lovely violin and keyboards backed up by top-notch vocals and a hella rad rhythm section.
I love the Beach Boys but I always remember their early releases being marred by obvious filler and some clearly second-rate material which is not the case with any of those early Beatles albums.

Outside of the Beach Boys first three records; going to disagree. Little Deuce Coupe, All Summer Long, Shut Down Volume 2, Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) are all leagues ahead of Please Please Me, With The Beatles, Twist & Shout, A Hard Day's Night, etc.
