Release Date: February 2, 2014
Listen: mp3 excerpts / My Inbox is currently empty
Genres: Avant-Folk, EAI, Art Pop

My personal album of the year, U as in Utah shines as an incredibly daring, unique improvisation. The band Ju Sei plays the gamut of popular music styles and some unpopular - from drone to hip hop to j-pop and beyond - while Utah Kawasaki interjects improvised synthesizer patterns spread across two medleys of sorts. The interaction of the synthesizer at times bolsters, at time cuts down, and at times goes by unnoticed to a more casual listener. I've always been really interested in the dynamics and varieties of improvisation possible, and I think this particular experiment of almost "live remixing" via half composed and half improvised music played by independent parties in real time is one that many who have a similar musical ethos will find very fascinating for that formal element alone. Beyond that, it is vastly more listenable than it deserves to be.
