And naturally Cale and Nico are on that record. too bad it's Ayers and not Wyatt, or you'd have the 1974 dream team.

Secret Treaties is alright, but Fear is another Cale masterpiece. Right up there with Music For a New Society and Paris 1919 as Cale's best work post Velvets.

While we're still pretty far off from figuring out what the best album of 1974 is (*cough* Rock Bottom *cough*), there's no question who the Man of The Year is. Brian Eno. He has his dirty mitts all over FOUR of the albums in this tourney - The End, Fear, Here Come The Warm Jets, and Taking Tiger Mountain. That's crazy. He also has a live album from this year which I haven't got a chance to listen to yet...

I really like both these albums. I feel this tourney is in danger of becoming sponsored by a NYC art gallery pretty soon though so I'll probably go with my nom, Secret Treaties. This tourney could use a little more straight-up RAWK, and Secret Treaties delivers intelligent, psychedelic hard rock in spades.

Secret Treaties is the best album in this tourney. It's an insanely fun album that has quite a nice psychedelic influence on it as well as being a bit heavy - ish at times. The reason I enjoy it so much is because it has a genius two track ending with a sound that replicates mystery and ambiguity to perfection. The rest of the tracks are also stellar, but Astronomy and Flaming Telepaths are two of the most perfect tracks I've ever heard.

I haven't really been keeping up with the tourney that much but I'm popping in here to vote for Fear because if any album deserves to go on it's that one. Early BOC is actually pretty solid though, nothing I love but not something I abhor either.

If you've been following this tournament, you've heard our next performer before. He produced and arranged Nico's The End, also playing the harmonium on that album. Hey, what's a harmonium? I'm glad you asked. It's a small pipe organ for which you pump air using foot pedals. Anyway, he plays it on the Nico album.

He does much more on this one.

Thumbnail. Fear by John Cale, nominated by Norman Bates.

Have you ever tried to type an umlaut? That's those two dots that go over certain vowels in foreign words and names of certain rock bands. Like, for example, Blue Öyster Cult. I just copied and pasted the name from Wikipedia, I don't know how to type an umlaut either.

Anyway, many Blue Öyster Cult fans say that, despite a certain lack of Don't-Fear-The-Reaper-ness, Secret Treaties is their best album. Which would surprise someone who only know them from one-hit-wonderland. Appraently , the other eight tracks makes up for it.
