The sound of the strings so magically captures it's time, I wonder why we don't really get that sound in music today. I listened to this yesterday for the second time and thoroughly enjoyed it, I really ought to explore this era more.

Wall Street Journal 2006-"Frank Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours is the finest vocal album of American popular music ever recorded."

That's funny, I almost bought this album in a little hole-in-the-wall situation in Salida, Colorado just last week. Decided against it for financial reasons, but certainly not for a lack of quality. He may have outdone this with Swingin' Lovers, but only slightly. Brilliant stuff.

To each their own. My distaste for Sinatra is similar to my distaste for prog -- whatever the technical skills of the artist, the bluster and arrogance tend to overwhelm my experience.

Still, I may have been exaggerating a bit when I said this album was "unlistenable". It's alright, for what it is. I think I'm in drakonium's camp in preferring upbeat Sinatra. Of his somber albums, I prefer Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely.

sp4cetiger puts down Sinatra whilst praising Chet Baker. No, me neither. Anyway, Sinatra and Riddle are an unbeatable combination - this, Swingin' Lovers, and Only the Lonely could all easily be on my chart. I love his phrasing, the way he can go from utter nonchalance to pure passion. I'll never understand the flak Sinatra gets, he's quite possibly my favourite singer.

One of those great, early break-up albums. Nothing but praise. It's gorgeous and sincere. Can't get much better than that.

Track picks
1. In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning
4. I Get Along Without You Very Well
11. I'll Be Around
13. It Never Entered My Mind
15. I'll Never Be The Same

The opposite of what lel said. I much prefer the happy Sinatra to the sad Sinatra, and this album really does nothing for me. This seems to be true for vocal jazz as a whole so far though, as I kinda disliked Lady In Satin and loved Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook.

This was my first Sinatra album -- I was a bit disappointed when I first heard it and I find it even more unlistenable now that I've really sampled the range of jazz vocalists from the late '40s and '50s. It's not that I consider him a bad singer so much as a horribly overexposed one. I know that Sinatra is an easy target for music snobs, but it's honestly a bit sickening that he still stands as the only artist many are familiar with from this wonderful era in American music.

For those who are interested in exploring a wider range of jazz singers from the same time period, here are some suggestions:

A masterpiece. Between Sinatra's touching vocals and Riddle's evocative arrangements, the two make a superb sad song cycle. The best album of the 50's that I've found so far in my exploration of the decade, and definitely Frank's best (I've always found Sad Balladeer Sinatra more interesting then Swingin' Superstar Sinatra)
