Yeah, I think the way RepoMan and Happymeal have been approaching things so far is great, with the only exception being the breadth of the genres we're voting on.

Sorry, my mockery of others was half-assed and not quite as obvious as I should have made it. I'm definitely on board for subgenres.

I must also ad that breaking up punk as something like 70s NYC, British 70s, and West Coast makes sense, because scenes worked that way, naturally stuff like Residents and Devo will never find a proper home in genre discussions, but that's nothing new.

Of course I support giving the author a lot of discretion, but I don't think there's anything wrong with establishing some rough guidelines going forward. Most of the options in the other poll ("Punk", "Indie Pop", "Post-punk") were all so broad that one of the following things would have happened:

- The author would do as you said, taking months to post. When they finally did, it would be a long and unwieldy mess that would inelegantly cover territory that others could have covered with a briefer, yet more interesting thread.
- The author will just skim the surface, doing a good job of covering the basics, but leaving many of us unfulfilled and wondering why the same information couldn't have been obtained from a Wikipedia article.
- The author will do a shit job, resulting in a lot of complaining and drama.
- The author will give posts that are so thorough and detailed that the author will wonder why they didn't just write a textbook. Very few people will actually read it.

Also, lay off RepoMan, I think he's doing a great job with this and I have no problem with him looking for user feedback.

I actually agree with this.

It's really tough, we essentially have to find "middle-ground" genres.

But the difficult part is determining which ones would be considered middle-ground. Should we just make a large compilation and decide/vote as a group?

Btw I'll be taking over some of HappyMeal's duties and I'm really excited. I apologize for my ignorance yesterday.

As I said in the other thread, I support keeping it narrow. If we try to tackle broad genres, like "punk", I think the discussion will tend to focus on albums and artists that most of us have already heard.

I think we should also vote on how many artists should be discussed in any genre extravaganza thread. And how many people should be allowed to react. And then how many tracks by a single artist are allowed a quote.

This is a little difficult, I agree with Gowi in that you don't want to make it too small that there isn't enough content. But I also think picking something like "Hip Hop" would be impossible.

However, if someone was up to the challenge, there could be overarching genres and then the person can go into detail about how those broad genres broke off into some of the sub-genres.

Regardless, I think any of this will be insightful.

RE: Punk, I know those were only examples but don't forget the riot grrrl scene. Spawned out of Olympia, WA! and it's very important (Sleater-Kinney)

Somewhere in the middle. We shouldn’t focus entirely on “locales” (ie: british punk, californian punk, etc.) since that subverts us to be all the too brief. Sub-genres and musical movements (such as say emotive hardcore or canterbury scene as examples) should be what we are looking to discuss. Even sub-genre styles can focus on bits of the movements and impact which I showed albeit a bit briefly with my Stoner Rock thread as I transitioned into Stoner Doom.

Genres like House/Techno are, in my humble opinion at least, too big to be dealt with as one meta-genre. An idea of the wide range of musical styles covered by those terms, see here and here.

No I'm not necessarily advocating that each sub-genre of House and Techno gets dissected at great length (although I would not object 🤣 ) but that perhaps House and Techno could be dealt with separately.

Then again, this is all coming from a novice of musical genres. If a more knowledgeable someone (especially the people putting together Genre Extravaganza threads) feels that House/Techno can be easily/concisely summarised as one, who am I to disagree?

So yeah, these are my justifications for voting for the latter choice, namely Narrow.

Can't wait to see what you guys come up with, regardless of genre or sub-genre. Keep up the good work. 😄

Narrow it down and keep everything concise, you guys all know I sort of hate all this sub-heading of genres which confuses listeners and therefore can lead to confusing and mis-leading discussions when attempting to discuss certain genres.
