Some of my memories, just on the off-chance that anyone might be interested in reading them (some names may have been changed)...

Damien

When I was 13 and began first year of 'secondary school', I was very uncomfortable as a person and greatly lacking in confidence. I had lots of friends, was good at schoolwork and at sports, but I still found happiness / self-esteem very hard to come by. In the year above me, there was a kid called Damien, who was a little bit of a lone wolf / fringe character, had no real interest in sports, and had no reputation as being a swot or nerd or geek or anything. He was just very normal but very, very relaxed in himself and did not feel the need to fit in with any group or curry favour with anyone. I was incredibly jealous of him and his relaxed state of being. I used to give him a hard time at break times, picking on any small flaw that I could find (I had to work damn hard at this 'cos he was a pretty cool fella who didn't really have anything wrong with him). I don't think I caused him any actual hurt but instead just made him wonder what the hell my problem was (it wasn't until some years later that I figured that out). Thankfully, it wasn't a situation that went on for very long (maybe no more than a month or so at most) but it stands out as a low point in my school years.

Vermin

In the town I grew up in a big pastime for young guys was playing a sport called 'pitch and putt', which is kind of like an entry-level game of golf. I became good friends with a guy called Aidan through it and I kinda knew him through primary school (though he was one year ahead of me) and the local gaelic football team as well. He was smaller and younger than a lot of his own friends / classmates, though, so wasn't really taken seriously by them.

Anyway, when Aidan headed to secondary school I kind of lost touch with him for that year. When I arrived into the school for my first days there, I found that he had basically evolved into being pretty much the coolest and the most popular kid in the entire place. He'd also managed to bag himself the quite wonderful nickname of 'Vermin'.

I bumped into him during a break and the two of us walked to one of the nearby shops. It was like a presidential parade or some shit. Gaggles of girls turned their heads and said stuff like 'Hiyyyy Vermin : )', 'Nice ass Vermin', 'Whatcha upta later Vermin?'. He was so busy with all this that I don't think we really talked at all.

We got to the shop and he bought me a bag of crisps. We walked back toward the school and it was just like it'd been earlier, with everyone wanting a piece of the guy. I knew we wouldn't be friends any more 'cos I just wasn't in the position to operate on that level of popularity. I don't think we ever spoke again actually, as he moved to another school the following year. One summer evening in town a couple of years later though, I saw Vermin from a distance wearing a pair of jeans that had been slit at the bottom. I took a scissors to several pairs of jeans soon after.

Miss Dempsey

Had a kind of flighty and vivacious French teacher called Miss Dempsey, who was in her 20's and fairly attractive. The skirts she wore were never particularly long and when she wrote on the blackboard, what God gave her would shake all over the place (possibly by design). There were actually rumours that she had been involved with one of her senior students. Anyway, this one day in class I asked a question, one that was not really unusual or notable or anything at all, but when I asked it, Miss Dempsey stopped what she was doing and sashayed over to my desk. She said, 'You have a brain, don't you, latenighttv?'. I said, 'Ummm, yeah'. Then the teacher leaned right into my face, really close, and breathily whispered : 'Use it'.

All I need to do is scroll down to my early days of Facebook and it's full to the brim with cringe.

Damn. I'm not sure the internet was even a thing when I was in middle school, let alone Facebook.

Ahh yes. Middle school is certainly a period I've mostly erased from memory. Had one friend killed in a hit and run, another died on a tread mill, and around the end of 8th grade, a few friends discovered the murdered body of my friend's best friend. Yup. Definitely don't wanna relive that shit.

She famously cut herself because of her anxiety

That sounds incredibly serious. And from an outside perspective, she's manipulative, and in a way she is, but there's definitely very very serious going on beyond a cry for attention. She likely suffered some sort of abuse as a child. Cutting usually results from really awful trauma. Just as anorexia can often result from rape and abuse.

When 7th started, we had to do a book report along with a little project, like a flip book or a slideshow. I chose board game, and the book was Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I drew a whole Wonka Factory Monopoly game, proper size and using the rooms from the books and a few of the actual candies like Nerds or Laffy Taffy. I think the railroads were replaced with the two glass elevators (there were two in the novel), the boat in the Chocolate room, and the weird vehicle in the movie that blew out all that... what is soap? Anyway, the board game got a lot of points and I got a definite A+. I always had a nack for drawing things that interested me back then. And I was pretty much the school artist for two years. I molded a dragon and the Cadillac logo out of clay. The Coloring was great, but the Cadillac logo wasn't... flat. I also won third place in the water conservation calendar contest and I made an 18-inch diameter wheel of fortune out of construction paper and sharpies. Took me a week or two, and I had the colors, numbers, and font on the money (haha pun). Imagine my frustration when I find out a week or two later that they changes a few of the wedges.

My middle school was a Junior High (7th, 8th and 9th grades). It seems like this was the time a lot of cliques were formed that carried over to high school. Either you were a nerd/dork, jock, or burnout. I enjoyed my junior high days. But I lived in a small community where everyone knew each other.

Back in middle school - I presume that's around the age of 14/15/16 back here in Britain I was very much frustrated and inquisitive about almost everything; the fact I realised my parents were not perfect, I was insecure and paranoid in relationships, and was rebellious towards work and my illness.

Yeah, I think middle school (if that's what you yanks call it) was a dark period for all of us. All I need to do is scroll down to my early days of Facebook and it's full to the brim with cringe. It's a phase where everyone is still trying to discover who they are and what they're about, a lot of kids turn to do doing dumb shit in an attempt to look zany, others hide themselves away, but it's all fine, that's what the age period is all about. You need to do dumb shit to realize it's dumb.

The one thing that really defined 'middle school' for me was this girl who gradually manipulated all of my friends. She famously cut herself because of her anxiety, but she would show everyone her cuts and try to do it in public for everyone to rush to her and give her comfort. I dismissed it all as attention seeking, which a lot of people saw as being insensitive. It was, in fairness, but the kids who cut themselves and don't tell anyone are the one's you really need to worry about. She dated my best friend for three years, and throughout the entire time she fueled the relationship with drama that the whole school leeched on, it felt like they're needed to be a weekly newsletter to keep up with it. And really I hated that, someone manipulating relationships to be the focus of attention. Eventually I refused to listen to any of the drama, and people would attribute it to me being 'too immature to understand a serious', and that used to really irritate me - we were 14 at the time. I think ultimately it helped me better myself though, rather than getting angry over it I learnt to just distance myself from it, and focus my concentration elsewhere to something that matters. She broke up with my friend a couple of years ago, and this girl has pretty much had a fling with almost all of my other friends, I never understood why they would waste their time with her - but I think they wanted someone to say 'I love you' back, which we all need sometimes. Anyway, my friend and I got blind drunk recently and he expressed how much he wished he'd spent more time with me, which meant a great deal. I think we all learnt something from it, and hey, school is a learning environment.

I'm starting Uni tomorrow, and I'll be able to get away from it all.

In 8th grade, my school had a play of Twelfth Night. Hilarious play, especially when Malvolio whipped out the yellow stockings and cross garters, and when the swordsman came around to defend "Cesario" and Aguecheek ended up running into Sir Toby's arms out of fear (I think it was Toby).
