I've let it be known many times that Sonic Youth really don't do a whole lot for me, but they do a whole lot more for me than Queen, who I despise, right down to the (admittedly instantly recognisable) tone of Brian May's guitar. Seriously, I hate the way that man plays guitar, regardless of how technically impressive it is. As for Sonic Youth, I can never put my finger on what it is that I don't particularly like about them (although I always thought they sounded a little flimsy, and that they all too often lack actual songs), but I don't remember ever being particularly offended by the guitar-playing, even if I've never been massively interested in it either (though if I was fifteen years older and they were the first band of their ilk I ever heard, I'd probably have a very different opinion of them).

But yeah, less of a vote for Moore here and more a vote against May. Who is also a cunt outside of music.

Overall? I'm not sure, but it depends what audience you polled. The alternative music scene of guitarists would certainly say they idolized Moore over May. But I'm also certain that if you polled power metal guitarists, non-alternative rock guitarists, progressive rock guitarists they might make more nods to May.

I really hate seeing the discreditation of Moore and what he's done because he writes walls of noise over the theatrical sort of licks May is known for.

That said, both are hugely influential and creative guitarists who are good at what they do; and those who imitate them don't quite come close.

I hate to shit on your comment even more, but I also disagree. I don't think this makes sense. Plenty of people play like Moore does, but that doesn't mean he isn't good. One of the reasons there are dozens of people that sound like May (also.. who? 😨 ), is because he influenced guitarists.. Queen were a sentimental stepping stone in glam rock, and even hair metal.

With that all being said, I'm still unsure on who to vote for 🤣

I'd have to agree, I feel like Moore's not as talented or influential personally. Though maybe that's because I was a big Muse fan for some time ...

Also, virtually no one plays exactly like May. I once heard someone say that trying to imitate him will make you just quit playing guitar. I've heard very few people who can come close to imitating his sound, which is probably because he built his own guitar and all that.

Yeah, whatever you may think of Brian May or Queen, there aren't many guitarists who sound like May.

As for Thurston, he was certainly pretty original in his own right, but it's also undeniable that he was very heavily influenced by Velvet Underground, so I'd at least say Brian May was the more unique of the two.

That being said, I rather prefer Moore's style these days. Nothing against May or Queen, I just really like the noisy wall of sound (ish) aesthetic typical of Moore's guitar tracks.

Brian May is certainly more theatrical and he has some guitar work that still holds up today, but damn it, I would really like Thurston to go through. If we got at least one half of the SY guitarists into at least the quarter finals, that'd be great.
