I had never been much of a music fan, but when I found Radiohead, I listened to their albums alone for hours on a daily basis over the course of nine months. I've listened to Pablo and TKOL maybe 15 times apiece, with all the others at least 50 times (I know, too much!). But having done all that, OKC is the one that I still find the magic in every time. I've listened to it over 100 times and I still find new things to love about it every listen. Call me cliché, call me unoriginal, call me predictable, but OKC's message about technology's societal impact combined with instrumentals that reinforce this idea make it almost impossible to beat. The Bends has some fantastic standalone singles and was my first favorite, but its replay value decreased at about 50 listens. Kid A took the longest to grow on me, and at the end of my Radiohead period it eclipsed OKC by the slightest margin. I've never loved it as much as many fans do. Amnesiac is their underrated gem, and has a beautiful, unique sound to it that ebbs and flows. I connected immediately with it. HTTT has some great rock, but its tracks are hit-or-miss and it sags in the middle. In Rainbows has fantastic tracks, but it's never had the wow factor to make me think it their best album for more than a day or two.

My rankings of all 8:

1. OKC
2. Kid A
3. Amnesiac
4. The Bends
5. In Rainbows
6. HTTT
7. Pablo
8. TKOL

I was always kind of partial to Amnesiac. The Yorke quote is great, and it goes along with what attracted me to it when I first listened to their full discography end to end (maybe a year after In Rainbows came out): where Kid A is this incredibly organized, formally flawless album, Amnesiac shows a little bit of the thought process that went into it, and thus avoids the pitfall of sounding like a soaring attempt to be Kraftwerk on Radio-Aktivitat or whatever other vague rock-meets-progressive-electronic comparison the music journalist in someone wants to make. This is a horrible articulation of what I'm trying to get across, but yeah, I like the slightly open-ended, unnerving elements of Amnesiac. Where Kid A lets you get lost in its creepy, prophetic vision of the 21st century, Amnesiac is always kind of drawing attention to its fiber as a music album made by people with specific tools. I need to listen to it again soon since I recently revisited Kid A.

Alright...well, Ok Computer is an obvious choice; as is Kid A. So I'm going to go completely left wing and say Amnesiac - probably their most interesting album when you think about it. Especially when you consider the way Thom York liked to describe it: "I read that the gnostics believe when we are born we are forced to forget where we have come from in order to deal with the trauma of arriving in this life. I thought this was really fascinating. It's like the river of forgetfulness. [Amnesiac] may have been recorded at the same time [as Kid A] ... but it comes from a different place I think. It sounds like finding an old chest in someone's attic with all these notes and maps and drawings and descriptions of going to a place you cannot remember."

- That statement alone completely improves the quality of Amnesiac. Therefore, it is indeed a brilliant album; possibly their best!

Rarely listen to Radiohead these days. Kid A was always my favorite, followed by OK Computer. If I had to pick a third, maybe Amnesiac? Always was meh on everything that came after and before that trilogy.
Kid A
OK Computer
The Bends

Rest are in small rotation.

SquishypuffDave wrote:

In Rainbows ... I honestly cannot fault it. It flows perfectly, it's just the right length, every track serves the overall experience, etc. The same can be said about the tracks themselves. The arrangements are economic, everything in its right place (haaawww), no song overstays its welcome or stops short of its potential.

(Kid A is amateur hour.)

All of this. It's the only album of theirs that actually lives up to the hype, though I do also really enjoy their rockier records (bar Pablo Honey). Hail to the Thief and The Bends are dope.

Amnesiac. Kid A is close, and OK Computer also has its strengths. The rest of their albums are decent (even Pablo Honey, which has some of their best rock songs), King of Limbs being the worst/least interesting one.

Hard choice. I love every song on In Rainbows, but I also love the atmosphere of OK Computer and the experimentation on Kid A.

I've been listening to OK Computer a lot lately, so I think I'll pick that as my #1, with In Rainbows trailing just behind.
