Besides the obvious points of eclecticism and open-mindedness, allow me to vent for a minute.

I have a friend who often judges artists or bands off of ONE FUCKING SONG. You do not understand how much this frustrates me. His taste in music is actually above-average I'd say, and he likes some pretty obscure stuff, but Jesus Christ that trait is SO PAINFUL to me.

Strongest case in point: He listened to "Whoa" by Earl Sweatshirt and called him "Tyler's wannabe protege". I told him how fucking stupid it was to judge him off of one song, and how fucking stupid it was to say that when the first verse of that song demonstrates the monstrous amount of talent Earl has over Tyler. I tell him to listen to more, at the very least Chum and Sunday. He refuses, thinking one song is enough to judge. AGGGHAAGHAHAGH

Not being able to find anything positive, even if its doubleswee/iceJJfish quality.

I wouldn't use the words 'Everybody thinks' and 'without a doubt' so close to each other. People mostly don't know what others are thinking.

haha I like this post.

Favourite Qualities:
Most actually know what they're talking about
You can actually have interesting debates
Everyone's willing to share their favourites with each other.

Hated Qualities:
Some can be very judgmental
Most don't realize that music, along with most forms of art, are opinionated.
Everyone thinks that they - without doubt - have the best taste in music, when obviously, as I said above, it is opinionated.

Generally though, I think this site is great! Finally a kind of "Facebook" for us music lovers!

How can you hate Boney M? Who even knows who they are? (I mean, I do. I think they're awesome. They took Disco and made it an art form. "Daddy Cool" was one of the best singles of 1977.) Donna Summer, I could understand her being a target. You couldn't listen to the radio in the late 70's without hearing "Hot Stuff" or "Heaven Knows" every other hour. Similar with Bee Gees and Abba. But I'm surprised that you would be that familiar with an obscure band you don't like so that theirs is the first name that comes to mind when making a "reasons I hate disco" list.

I just looked up their chart history. Apparently they were huge in Britain. Never mind, you're allowed to hate them. (But you'd be wrong, because they were awesome.).

I loved Nickelback. Dark Horse made my top 100 albums on my first list of best ever albums, way back in the 7th grade (5 years ago). After "This Afternoon" was released as a single, though, I was kind of done with them, and had moved on to bigger and better things (it was around that time that I first heard some of my favorite albums and some which are the most important to me, including FEFA and Unknown Pleasures). I also started listening to albums' lyrics, and was surprised to find that Nickelback's lyrics were as bad as they were. It also felt somehow suspect to their talent if they were so stuck on Dark Horse that they were still releasing singles off it almost 2 calendar years after the first single.

Flashforward to Sophomore year, and I've developed an annoyance towards them. Here and Now was horrendous, and after that bombshell, I decided to dig backwards into their discography. Wow. It was bad. It was horrible. A few songs along the way, mainly singles, caught my ear and I enjoyed them a little, but wow, impressively bad discography.

Of course, if it was just that they had 1 good album, and otherwise bad albums outside of a few singles, I'd not say I "hate" them. No, lots of bands do that frankly, Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday instantly coming to mind. Frankly, I rather like both bands still, as their good albums were great, but even if they were just good, I think I'd just sort of ignore their existence.

But that wasn't enough. No no. The universe wanted me to hate Nickelback.

At the end of sophomore year, I was invited by my best friend to go to a concert. The acts were all a surprise, which was really exciting. First up's Demi Lovato. I rolled my eyes but was impressed by her vocal ability. Next was Train. I went "oh, hey, they're pretty good". Then I realized what a huge Train fan I am. I knew every word to every song they played. While this was embarrassing, it was a great show. Then out comes Pitbull. Another eyeroll as my best friend is excited to dance. I gotta say, I'm still not a fan of his, but he sounds exactly like he does on his recorded music. Maybe he was lipsyncing, but he did enough different stuff, I don't think so.

"And for our final act, we have a rock and roll band from Canada!" I could hear my best friend's dad hoping for Rush, and I was mouthing "Arcade Fire". My best friend told me later she was just hoping they weren't finding some coy way to introduce Bieber. "Nickelback!" See, a friend of mine had asked what I would do if the headliner was Nickelback, as he knew it was a surprise lineup. "Why, I'd walk to hour long drive home right then and there!" I said. I started rolling on the ground laughing my ass off. My best friend, aware of this fact, blamed me for jinxing us.

Well, we would sit it out. Her mom seemed interested and joined the mosh pit. When the band was announced, however, about 1/3 of the stadium up and left. By the time they were done, another 1/3 had gone. The mosh pit was 2 people. The vendors had run out of food because so many people had left to get food instead of watching the travesty on stage.

Why were they so bad, you ask? Let me tell you. First, they played a few songs totally devoid of emotion or life. They just sort of played them to get them out of the way. Then Kroeger stopped. "How's everybody doing?" a cheer rose up as me and the Asian family behind us started jeering at him. "Can I get a beer up here?" Kroeger then asked. No other band had had anything on stage, and he complained about it being totally dry backstage. So we sat there. No one wanted to give up their beer, and he wasn't gonna keep playing without one. It was about 4 minutes before a stagehand ran up with a beer, Chad took it down, and kept going after a "woohoo".

They then broke into the longest set of the day, including a set of Metallica covers that got them some boos from the local audience. In fact, no one could tell what the first song was until they said it was Metallica, and the local SF audience seemed upset that they were so disgracing local heros.

The band ended and left. We started packing up. lolnope encore time. They've already gone over schedule, but let's have an encore. No one was cheering for one, anything, they just decided to come back. They played 3 more songs and left.

But no, that wasn't enough. They came back on the stage. No one clapped. No one did anything. They were somewhat drunk by now, the guitar skills of whoever their lead guitarist was were waning, and the drummer was the only one who looked like he was vaguely enjoying himself. The Asian family behind us started heckling Kroeger, as did I, when they came back out. We were close enough to the stage he heard us, looked at our little group, put his hand up, and with a smile said "You're welcome".

Not only did their lyrics suck, not only did their music outside of one album I liked when I was young suck, not only did they put on an awful show at a charity event, not only did they play 2 encores that weren't asked for after going over schedule, he felt the need to end the night like that. Except then there were I think 2 more songs.

I've seen some bad concerts in my day, trust me, I have. I've been to middle school talent shows, I saw Heart play when they were FAR too old, I saw My Morning Jacket scare a bunch of special needs children that they were playing for by deciding to not really be acoustic and get too jammy. Hell, I sat through an entire set by Sawmill Joe. But I have never, ever seen a show as bad as Nickelback's. As lifeless, as talentless, as arrogant, or as simply inconsiderate.

And that is why I seriously hate Nickelback.

What's the deal with people thinking their sense of humor should be everyones sense of humor? I mean I know my childish sort of rant at Mercury was me enforcing my humor on someone else, but it seems everyone is like LAUGH LIKE ME or DIE.

kind of a tension here... what if someone just really doesn't like upbeat music? i have no idea how that's possible personally and love me some saccharine tunes, but i know of plenty of people who prefer to get lost in oceans of sound whenever they take the time to listen to an album and i don't diss 'em for it

Likes: people who listen to music for enjoyment and don't care about what's "cool" or what will make them more respected

Dislikes: people who like or dislike music due to hype or popularity, to either seem "cool" or hip or to be "edgy" for disliking said music. Seriously, listen to the music and form your own opinion.
People who make prejudiced assumptions or judgements about people who are fans of certain types of music (metal, country, mainstream hip hop, and pop being the most judged genres for this). Oftentimes these people are insecure 4channers and YouTube commenters who are my age or younger who are blatantly bigoted cunts.
People who make ignorant judgements about entire genres without having listened to them, or based on what is on the radio of those genres
Popular music haters who hate pop just because it's "cool" to do so
People on music forums who chastise users whose tastes are rather different or with different preferences/ not heard as much as being "uncultured" or "uneducated". In reality, said people are trying to explore their tastes or are just into different shit in general. They're not uneducated or whatever, if they're not attacking people then these "different" users are usually a hell of a lot fucking more cultured than the insecure pathetic attackers.

Someone who understands classical music theory. (I myself do not, so I appreciate the education.)
Actual musicians who give there perspective. (I am not a musician, so I appreciate the education.)
Someone with a well grounded historical perspective. (Any era can produce great music )
Someone who will call me on it when I get too pretentious. (Miss you, lethalnezzle).
Someone who knows what he likes, knows what he doesn't like, and is honest about it.
(Full disclosure: I like Top 40 music from any era. I don't like jazz or experimental. I don't think my taste is superior to anybody's, but it is mine.)

Dislike:
Those who think music began in (pick a year)
Those who think music stopped in (pick a year)
Those who dislike popular music because it's popular.
Anti-fun people. ("That album is too much fun. I hate it. I much prefer this droning depressing album.")
People who take it for granted that a particular artist "sucks" and assume everone agrees.
(Example: Nickelback. Seriously, why all the hate? Chad Kroeger has an amazing Rock and Roll voice).
People who dismiss any music for being "derivative". (Originality is a very rare thing, because everything has been tried in the last 100 years of recorded music. Just because you've never heard it before...)

Really dislike people that don't like lists, and say that lists have no point. I take that personally.

General complaint:
The word "Hipster" gets thrown around a lot. I've never heard a definition that makes sense to me, and the word is completely meaningless until someone can explain what that means.[/b]

-Not affected by other people's opinions.
-People with a genuine interest in many genres. Variety is the spice of life.
-Having a sense of humor about your own tastes or when it comes to music in general.
-Someone you can chill with and have a long one-on-one conversation about music.
Dislikes:
-Music listeners with a superiority complex.
-People who bash artists or genres and don't explain why they suck.
-Getting upset when someone bashes your favorite artist. Not cool, man.
-People who use the phrase "sell-out" and people who don't understand the concept of "selling out".
