Two albums for the price of one! 😁

If the compilation title contains the names of both albums, I split them in iTunes and in my collection. If not, I keep the album name. I've also noticed that many compilation albums contain albums that were only released on vinyl.

The Jesus Lizard - Head/Pure
The Birthday Party - Mutiny/The Bad Seed
The Cramps - Psychedelic Jungle/Gravest Hits
Fugazi - 13 Songs

Most of the time, albums are combined in order to increase sales and lower production costs. Good if you get more bang for your buck, but I hate that it causes people to lump the two releases together. Unless the artist made the conscious decision to combine the two albums I would treat them separately. Gram Parsons and Flying Burrito albums should be looked at independently, but System of a Down's Mesmerize and Hypnotize work well together because they were made to compliment each other.

Occasionally an artist (or label) will combine two previously released albums to make 1 double album

a few examples

GP / Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

High, Low and In Between / The Late Great Townes Van Zandt by Townes Van Zandt

I'd like to know peoples thoughts on including these on your personal charts. Typically I would say "Let each album be its own". Especially in the Van Zandt case, I think the individual albums are capable of standing on there own and the compilation feels bloated.

There are, however, some cases where combining the two work better than they did separately.

Justin Townes Earle released Single Mothers last year and Absent Fathers this year and then released

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

Single Mothers And Absent Fathers by Justin Townes Earle

I think the compilation is the best of the three.

What are your thoughts on this practice and are there other examples of where it worked and where it did not.

Happy Friday!
