So Defago's team is pretty great. Donuts is tons of fun, The Life Pursuit is the only late-period Belle and Sebastian album I love, and Ys is just on another level. However, I could do without Thom Yorke's solo work and I actively dislike TV on the Radio.

Still, that would be enough for me to vote for Defago's team against more than half of what I've seen fielded. Unfortunately, he's going up against the second best team in the tourney so far (Skinny's first 2000 team being the first best). There's no album less than great in Cellar's line-up and two that are transcendent (Damaged and Red Mecca).

Voted 1981.

This is super tough...I can't see myself voting against Return to Cookie Mountain (in my top 30 or 40), but I'm not a huge fan of anything else in 2006 (well, Life Pursuit turned out to be better than expected, and When You Were Young has nostalgia value). On the other hand, 1981 has two OK albums (Damaged and Faith), one great album (Songs of Pain), and two "not bad but meh" albums (I don't know why I don't like post punk....). To settle this, I've decided to add up my ratings for the albums:

1981: 85 + 75 + 75 + 60 + 65 = 360
2006: 60 + 95 + 75 + 60 + 55 = 345

Dammit. Gonna listen to the singles again and then decide.

EDIT: Going 1981, I'm on kind of a Daniel Johnston kick right now and there are 3 '81 albums better than the 2nd best 2006 album.

1981 had way better singles, but I have to give it to 2006 for albums. (Donuts is probably my favourite from either team.)

Except for the singles, the 2006 albums are way better than the 1981 albums.

Life Pursuit was amazing, and went straight to the top of my 2006 list.

Life Pursuit > Faith. Faith was the best of the 1981 albums, and it was only adequate.
Donuts > Youth of America. Donuts was almost as impressive as Life Pursuit; YoA was OK.
Return to Cookie Mountain > Red Mecca. Red Mecca was dull, and it was the third best album.
Eraser > Damaged.
Ys > Songs of Pain. Newsom's voice grates (sorry, Newsom fans). Songs of Pain was just... exactly what it says on the cover.

I'm glad to promote 1981 and am totally convinced it was a huge year for great albums. I've enjoyed completing my listening log for the year and sharing my favorites.
Difficult decision. Both strong teams, but neither is really speaking to me. I love the Daniel Johnston/Cabaret Voltaire combination, and the other three albums are all very good, plus a very consistent singles collection, but the whole team just feels a bit narrow in scope, basically just variations on post-punk throughout. That said, the team really does feel like a representation of Cellar's tastes, and (again) it's difficult to understate just how great the juxtaposition of Daniel Johnston and Cabaret Voltaire together is. 2006 is more varied, but probably less consistently strong. I love Ys and Donuts as much as the next guy, and Return to Cookie Mountain is dope too, but The Eraser and The Life Pursuit, whilst enjoyable, are far from their respective creators' best work. Also, I think the 2006 singles team is slightly weaker, even though 'We Are Your Friends' is probably my favourite single of all ten on show, but overall the team is very good. Leaning slightly towards 2006 at the moment, if only because I feel it's more varied stylistically, but there's very little to choose between the two. Will make a decision later in the week.

Leaning 81 on the fact it just feels a bit more complete, even though 06 rivals it with it's highlights (and I love that you included the JMan anthem). Although Damaged is great and Red Mecca is another extremely underrated album, the combination of Ys-Return To Cookie Mountain-Donuts is as top notch as it gets. Again, hard decision.

06 gets DEMOLISHED. This isn't hard at all for me, not a fan of a lot of the more popular releases in 06 (Newsom's never done anything for me, sorrynotsorry). The only album I'd put as good is J Dilla's, and TV on the Radio sneaks in with an "above average".

Whereas 81? OMD, Black Flag, and The Cure. There's no voting against that, CD put out an insane team. EDIT: I saw those three and that was enough to beat all of 06, missed one of Johnston's better releases. Seriously, this is no contest.

It's obviously my choice of the two.

Haha! Pretty much had the same thought. But for Cellar's. All of his picks could easily be on my overall. Haha! Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure two of them already are.
