You have it at 4.5 stars. Is there really only 1/2 star difference between The Blue Album and Make Believe to you?

It was originally 4, but they changed it to 3 because of all the negative responses to it (because allmusic's are more general consensus's mixed with their own opinion).

Just because it's pop, and they used to be grungy, doesn't make it bad.

I think it's a brilliant pop album. I'm definitely not the only one that thinks that. e.g. IGN gave it a 9.3, not saying that means a lot, but I pretty much agree with their review and score. Rolling Stone gave it 4, which is generally the highest they give an album on original release.

But if you don't like it, I can't help that. Just like how I think Sgt. Pepper is a load of mediocre crap, whilst many call it the 'best ever'.

Make Believe 4.5

Really?

I can understand why people hate that one. "It's too poppy!" "It's overproduced!" "They sold out!" "Beverly Hills omg"

I can't be bothered writing an essay on why Make Believe is a great album, but I'll quote this from the allmusic review:

" The Green Album and its quickly released 2002 follow-up, Maladroit, were both sharply written, tightly constructed, quite excellent, and popular rock records, but that didn't stop some fans from grumbling that neither album was as affecting as Pinkerton.

Those same fans will likely not be happy with Cuomo's return to musical, emotional bloodletting with 2005's Make Believe. It may be a spiritual cousin to Pinkerton, yet it's far removed from the raw, nervy immediacy of that album.

... (later on) ...

He never overwrites, either in his words or melodies, his songs are carefully, precisely crafted pop, and his love of metal and rock gives his music muscle and balls. These gifts are as evident on Make Believe as they had been on every other Weezer record -- the only difference is this has a lighter, brighter feel than any of its predecessors, not just in the music but in its outlook. It might not be what Weezer fans want, but as that aforementioned Rolling Stone article made clear, Cuomo never cared much about that in the first place. If they're not immediately taken with Make Believe, give it time. After all, Pinkerton didn't win fans immediately."
They're called The Blue Album and Pinkerton.

Unless you're stupid, a couple of songs don't beat entire albums.

they're both very good albums but have you heard Deadwing, In Absentia, Fear Of A Blank Planet etc to be able to compare? because I actually do think the blue album is the best album overall but when you have made albums like Raditude, The Green Album, Make Believe etc there is little you can do to redeem yourself...

so let's just say don't throw stones in glass houses :D

I do admit I haven't heard that much of Porcupine Tree, but I believe that you should just look at the best of the two and compare that.
I mean, if it was Weezer vs. The Beach Boys, I'm sure The Beach Boys would win, but look at the LONG list of really shit albums they released. It's almost Pet Sounds alone that would win it.

Besides, I honestly believe that the post-2000 Weezer albums are hated on unnecessarily and that they're actually quite good - no 5 stars - but 4.5s 4s and 3.5s.

even if you look at the best of the both bands, Weezer aren't neccesarily ahead. To be honest I probably hold the bands fairly equally if ignoring stuff after pinkerton because honestly what album of Weezer's after 2000 deserves a 4 let alone a 4.5???

Blue Album 5
Pinkerton 5
Green 4.5
Maladroit 4.5
Make Believe 4.5
Red 4
Raditude 4
Hurley 3.5
IMO
That's in order, so yeh, they are declining in quality.

Xavygravy wrote:

I found these gems.

They're called The Blue Album and Pinkerton.

Unless you're stupid, a couple of songs don't beat entire albums.

they're both very good albums but have you heard Deadwing, In Absentia, Fear Of A Blank Planet etc to be able to compare? because I actually do think the blue album is the best album overall but when you have made albums like Raditude, The Green Album, Make Believe etc there is little you can do to redeem yourself...

so let's just say don't throw stones in glass houses 😁

                          I found this gem:

Yet another glorious b-side.
