Well, Loveless and Spiderland are on my chart, and Low End Theory probably could be. Not only that, but there's Unfinished Sympathy and Summer Babe, which might be my favorite song of all time. Not only that, but I don't really like Tago Mago, which seems to be the big draw for 1971. So my choice is pretty easy here.

That Baby Huey album is pretty good though; Popol Vuh, on the other hand, is not my thing.

Baby Huey > Heavenly vs. Satan
Histoire de Melodie Nelson > Low End Theory
Tago Mago < Loveless
Hunky Dory < Reggae Owes Me Money
In Den Garden Pharoa = Spiderland
1971 singles > 1991 singles

The only enjoyable album on the 1991 side was Heavenly vs. Satan, which, I'll admit, was delightful. 1971 had Baby Huey and the Histoire, both of which far excelled the rest of the 1991 field. Spiderland and the Popul Vuh albums were both total snoozefests. Loveless and ROMM were merely okay, and didn't beat their opponents by much. Singles pretty much washed.

It comes down to: Baby Huey and Melodie Nelson were the two best albums in the match. I gotta give this one to Team Huey.

Went 91 in the end, I just can't bring myself to vote again Loveless, Spiderland, and Low End Theory (plus the Heavenly and Ragga Twins albums which I really enjoyed), even if it means voting against Tago. Both teams have only great albums, just 91 slightly more great overall, plus much better singles. Tough one.

Okay so ultimately those 1991 singles were the clincher. Jim's team certainly isn't 3x as good as Charlie's though.

Thanks, Jim! Best Dressed Chicken totally clicked with me yesterday & I'm LOVING it! It's whacked with tons of color which I love. That Barber song rules! It's totally stuck in my head. Can't really do back to back raga albums though no matter how good. I'm just not wired like that. Will totally throw it on the list though!!! :D

They're very different records - Best Dressed Chicken is classic 70s deejay style, and one of the finest examples of the genre (along with Big Youth's Screaming Target, U-Roy's Version Galore, Tapper Zukie's MPLA and Presenting I-Roy), whereas the Ragga Twins LP is (in layman's term) ragga pon de rave, and a four-to-the-floor assault. Imagine early Prodigy skanking whilst eating dem rice 'n pea whilst drinking Red Stripe and you're not far off.

Should defo check out Baby Huey though...!

Kudos to Applerill for picking it - it's a riot.
That said, maybe you shouldn't bother with either of the above and listen to the Ragga Twins LP instead. Haha! 😁

Ok. Looking for a recommendation here, guys!

This is the first matchup to test my AOTW dictum as I haven't heard two of Applerill's choices (Baby Huey & Popol Vuh) making it impossible to fully suss out how I feel about his lineup. 😕

Even though it seems impossible that I'd vote against a team fielding Spiderland, Loveless, & The Low End Theory I'm just not sure as both Hunky Dory (the Bowie album I'm most apt to spin when I'm out drinking with friends) and Tago Mago are HUGE personal faves (I think both are in my overall at the moment.)

Which album - The Baby Huey Story or In Den Garten Pharaohs - do you guys think could shift my vote the most (& why)? I'll make it my next historical AOTW and then vote accordingly. Hot Snakes will just have to wait. 😐

Thanks for any help! Sorry if this seems a tad egotistical, but every AOTW counts! A week is a long time people. 🤣

Both album selections are pretty much untouchable. Hunky Dory might be my favourite Bowie, and the other four are perhaps even more amazing. Probably leaning slightly towards 1991 on the album front though, largely thanks to the inclusion of Tribe and the Ragga Twins, but Spiderland and Loveless could both very conceivably be in my Top 100 too. And, to top that off, that 1991 singles selection is my favourite of the tournament so far, with arguably Pavement's greatest song, that minor masterpiece from Massive Attack, and three other excellent examples of the form (had completely forgotten how great 'The Concept' is, whilst 'Shiny Happy People' never fails to bring a smile to my face, and Spiritualized are just godly). 'Family Affair' is my favourite single across both teams, and one of my favourite songs ever by anyone ever ever ever, but the consistency just isn't there with the singles (and I'll add my voice to those calling for 'Imagine' to be outlawed - being forced to sing it at school probably didn't help matters, but I just find it intolerably nice).

But anyway, vote to 1991, despite a beautiful album selection from 1971.

Jesus. When I saw Applerill's team, I couldn't imagine voting against it, and then Jimmy threw down albums of equivalent greatness. The difference maker is Jimmy's singles. "The Concept" breaks any tie between the albums. Shiny Happy People, Summer Babe, and Feel So Sad just add icing to the cake
