No.
Poor lyrics are such a turn off for me that I can't even continue to listen to the album, even if everything else is incredible.

I generally don't pay as much attention to lyrics, unless they're prominent enough to have a significant effect on the song (e.g. Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joanna Newsom) or if a song happens to be pretty catchy. Maybe it's because I find it hard to understand lyrics unless they're in Urdu (same problem with movies, so I watch them with subtitles mostly). Another thing is that, for me, the quality of lyrics is closely tied to the vocal performance (both its quality and its relation with what is being expressed in the lyrics).

Bad lyrics aren't bad but good lyrics are good.

Kind of like that. Some of my favourite music has lyrics I would scrawl on the walls with blood if I ever started sleepwalking. Or, well, sing at random times. Or write down compulsively. Gonna write some on my wall whenever I live on my own.

I don't hate love the pop-style, minimalist type of lyrics. I think it suits a lot of songs. Lyrics shouldn't really be judged by how they look written down, but what you hear/feel/imagine while they're being sung. Its a different thing, definitely. Also what Applerill said. (wow I just realized his name has apple in it...I mean I knew it had apple in it but I only just realized apple as in the fruit)

I think emotion and meaning carry themselves beyond lyrics, but lyrics help for sure. I think the extent to which lyrics lend power to a song is exaggerated, but they do give you something to hold onto, something more tangible to express what the song already made you feel, and they do sort of sharpen the emotion to something more acute. Artists who piggyback to being meaningful through their lyrics don't really gel with me.

It kind of goes without saying for me that lyrics that are aesthetically or morally repugnant are points against a song, but I have such a hard time imagining bad, truly bad, lyrics going with great music. Bad lyrics to good music is even rare.

Bad lyrics do bring down an album, as they are just as important as the music. But for me it's easier to tune out bad lyrics than it is to tune out bad music. That said, there are songs I enjoy as long I as tune out the bad lyrics. But bad music is hard to escape. However if the lyrics are on a Justin Bieber or Fred Durst level, then no I don't think I could enjoy the song, and I wouldn't listen to an album by either of those people anyway.

Bad lyrics can definitely put me off of a song. I make an exception for songs that are musically spectacular or prog rock (I just assume all prog lyrics are cheesy as fuck anyway, makes it more of a pleasant surprise when they're not).

Sometimes i "ignore" the bad lyrics if the music and overall song are good. Sometimes i like bad lyrics as part of an otherwise good song, sort of in a comical or fun-cheesy way. Sometimes bad lyrics kill an otherwise good song for me. Depends on the song.

They have to be extremely offensive or disgusting to spoil a song, i.e., the relentless gay bashing in DMX's "Where the Hood At" or the shameless misogyny in Ne-Yo's "When You're Mad." Even the cheesiest lyrics can't interfere with an otherwise catchy or musical piece if they're at least innocent.

I used to think that I needed good lyrics. Nope. It's that bad lyrics are incredibly distracting. There are a few exceptions–"If there's something wrong/In the heart of man/Take it from your heart/Put it in your hand"–but gosh can they ruin perfectly nice sounding tracks.

I think lyrics should be judged by how well they affect how the song makes you feel: If something silly makes you feel something significant, then the lyrics could be called "good". If they keep you from feeling what the other parts of the song are pulling you towards, then the lyrics are bad.

Still, before worrying about writing lyrics, try writing songs. This way you won't end up like Symphony X.

Bad lyrics just make me lose respect for an artist. I end up questioning the quality of the instrumentation and almost "double-take" the song's originality. (The halo effect)
