I'm on BEA a lot while I'm at work (waiting for the computer to do something, for instance), and it's nice not to have to scroll away from the NSFW album covers.

(Side note: What was Chumbawamba thinking with that Anarchy cover? More importantly, is that the same baby on Tubthumper? )

Anyway, my question is, how is Safeness decided for the purposes of Safe Mode. Am I supposed to flag the ones that I don't want seen over my shoulder? Can this by over-ruled by somebody later on?

The 'safe mode' was introduced about six months ago for logged out users. The default mode for registered users is for 'safe mode' to be switched off so it doesn't affect members unless they decide to toggle the switch (from your profile page).

In most cases it's quite an easy decision to determine an 'unsafe' image, but it's not always clear cut. The main factors that will determine an unsafe image are pornographic content, nudity, lewd poses, prominent bad language, or is otherwise not family friendly. The Google AdSense terms of service are very strict - and broadly BEA is trying to comply with the standards set by Google.

A lot of sites now have "censored artwork" as the default because a lot of advertisers don't want their ads displayed on a page that might also contain images that could affect their brand image. BEA no longer displays ads from Google AdSense for this very reason because BEA violated Google's terms of service by showing uncensored images within album art. BEA's 'safe mode' was primarily introduced to try and make BEA comply with Google's terms of service as quite simply the money from advertising pays the hosting fees, keeps the site running, and makes the site free for everybody to use.

Yes, if you spot an image that appears unsafe, please report it via the admin page for that album and it can be reviewed and flagged as necessary. I've already had the dubious pleasure of reviewing all 70,000 album covers a few months ago and as albums are added to the database, these are all being reviewed as well. Obviously, there are bound to be some that slip through the net, so it would be a great help if people could flag these if they discover any.

I mean, on one hand I understand it's application - despite its place as art, art isn't divorced of context. You're not going to hang HR Giger at a Kindergarten and tell disgruntled parents "...but it's art!" If Listmeister is at work staring at Chumbawumba's Anarchy (why?) the excuse "but it's art!" will be about as helpful as "of course this is work!"

But much like listening to censored music, or getting that ereader app that bleeps out the swears for you, I support individuals right to ruin their own experiences through censorship - but I think having "censored artwork" be the default when when not logged in, rather than an option you can turn on WHEN logged in, should be changed. Safe mode shouldn't be the default.
