i once had someone tell me the sound of gulls and waves crashing on the beach was superior to any mere music, but i have to say if i got an album of field recordings of just a day at the beach without at least some mumbled French overdubbed, i'd give it like three stars tops

this started as topical but i don't know where it went

A really underappreciated psych rock album from the early 70s. Very blues-based, but still with a little bit of weirdness that makes for a fun album. The guitar is great, thick, warm psych rock guitar, really solid album all around.

Blurryface by Twenty One Pilots

I give a lot of credit to bands that try to make their own unique sound by fusing genres, and Twenty One Pilots certainly do that. They combine a little hip-hop, a little rock, even some reggae at some point, but their biggest strength is their keen ability to write a catchy hook, and that's what's gotten them to be so popular. Lyrically, this album is, at best, ok, and at worst kinda cringey. You've got lines like "The songs on the radio are ok/but my taste in music is your face" or "I'm driving, here I sit/Cursing my government/For not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement". It all feels like an angsty suburban kid's take on Linkin Park or something, but you know what? That's ok, there always has and always will be music for that, there's music for everyone from every walk of life. This album can be decent lyrically too, at the very least we know Tyler Joseph is being honest with us, it all feels very cathartic for him as he raps/sings about his emotional insecurities and all the issues he has. Blurryface is supposedly a character that represents all of his insecurities, which is a little eye-roll worthy, but it is what it is. All in all, this is a catchy record with some definite highlights and a couple tracks that are a bit forgettable. But still, the highlights are worth it.
Total guitar porn, and not a whole lot else. Zakk Wylde is one hell of a guitar player, but when it comes to putting together a comprehensive, good album, he's pretty hit or miss. This is just basically him shredding like a madman (short of a couple ballads) for an hour, which is fine if you're into that, I thought it was alright, but as a whole, it's just slightly above average.

Sent by dbz in the album listening thread. Really interesting, very unsettling, kind of chaotic album but in a really cool way. Lots of polyrhythmic craziness going on, well composed and all, cool stuff.
John Hiatt is one of the most underrated songwriters out there, and having Ry Cooder play guitar along with him could not have been more perfect. Cooder is just a master of the slide guitar, I'm talking like up there with Duane Allman good, and he really nails it on this album. The combo of Hiatt's excellent songwriting and Cooder's fantastic guitar playing make this a really wonderful album
This is why Danny Gatton is considered one of the best guitarists around, this album right here (among others). The technical skill on this album is just amazing, and not only can he shred it, but he plays with some soul too, especially on the eerie and beautiful "Melancholy Serenade". Very intricate, very technical album, pretty cool stuff.
Without a doubt, one of the best live rock albums ever. Michael Schenker is just an insane guitar player, and if you ever wanted to find out exactly how good he is, this is the album to listen to. There's a ton of energy, and this is basically a lineup of all of UFO's greatest hits. From front to back, just a real kickass album.

It's been a loooooong time since I've listened to this album. This was actually one of the first albums that got me into power metal, I remember browsing around on iTunes on the "recommended if you like" section and seeing this album cover (which is pretty badass) and deciding I'd give it a shot, and I remember loving it, and I still do. It's just one of the best power metal albums I've ever heard. Instrumentally, it kills, the guitars are reminiscent of some of Yngwie Malmsteen's stuff, Timo Kotipelto's vocals are some of the best this side of Michael Kiske, and it all is composed wonderfully. It's just this big, awesome, neoclassical metal album that's really a ton of fun to listen to. It still is and always will be one of my favorites.

Ho. Ly. Shit. This is so dark, and huge, and intense, and frightening. This is just some kind of nightmarish fever dream, loud, crazy, polyrhythmic electronic music that will stress you the hell out but in the coolest way. The whole album is so dark, the track titles are like "Befriend A Childkiller" and "All The Children Are Dead", the latter of which contains this super creepy story about the discovery of 74 carcasses of dead children. Just, good god, this was incredible. It's frightening, it's just so much, so heavy. Somebody hold me, I stared into the void and it stared right back at me and laughed.
If you wanna just chill, this is a good place to head. Kind of like some blend between Devendra Banhart and Will Oldham's music with a dash of Jim James. Very reverb-heavy, very simple singer-songwriter music. It sounds like it was written and recorded in a cabin in the mountains somewhere, and it has a very natural, earthy feel to it because of that. It feels isolated, and it feels personal, which makes for a pretty cool album.

Sometimes repetitive stuff is boring, and sometimes it's absolutely surreal, and that's what this is. The first track, good lord, it's like it created the aura around my computer, I felt like the air was thickened with the music, it just made everything around me better. The rest of the album was great too, but that first track, man, that is incredible, just absolutely gorgeous. Fantastic stuff.
So Nacho recommended me this in the other thread, and I have to say, this was pretty awesome. It had this great balance between these noisy, thick guitars and delicate, fragile strings. At times this album was big and at times I felt like it'd fall apart it was so thin. Really gorgeous, and I'm not surprised, Ben Frost is quite good at what he does. Plus, the Michael Gira tribute was pretty cool too, loved it, great music to do work do, really fills out the background in a lush way.

Man, this is just a little bit of everything. I guess primarily it'd be post-rock, but it's certainly an interesting take on it. A little bit of electronic/ambient, a little bit of krautrock, some psychedelia, tossed together with a trumpet, it's different and that makes it really unique. The whole album feels kind of uneasy and dark until the end which gets huge and powerful, it almost feels like redemption, like the light at the end of the long tunnel that you've been waiting for. Really cool stuff
Now THAT is a power metal album. A perfect blend of power metal, prog metal and folk music that creates an exceptionally unique and powerful album. The vocalist has this Ronnie James Dio on steroids voice and the guitars are just incredible, the tone, the use of the whammy bar, it's all excellently crafted, it's not mindless shredding, it all has a purpose, and that purpose is to blow your brains out. It's everything I could want a power metal album to be and then more. It's glorious.
