i listened to a lot of radiohead during my formative years. a lot. i've probably listened through every one of their albums upwards of a hundred times each. i know them like the backside of my stratocaster.

now, the albums i return to when i need radiohead? hail to the thief. amnesiac. the king of limbs (it really does grow on you if you put the time into it).

all of their albums have merit to them. i remember being obsessed with the bends back in the day, but now, it's probably the last album of theirs i'd listen to (even after pablo). pablo at least holds some mystery for me for lack of exposure. i've just talked myself into listening to that later today. no. not later. now. ok, now.

in all fairness, pablo honey was written/recorded in a very short time span due to creep's success, a song they don't even own writing credits for. they'd just finished college and were screwing around. it was all a mess, but it's quite charming nonetheless. the bends, on the other hand, feels generic and contrived (save for street spirit, just and fake plastic trees).

eh. my two cents.

i know half of you want this conversation to die. i apologize for perpetuating your annoyance.

I think that Kid A and In Rainbows are their best albums, they have their most interesting aesthetic qualities and they might be my favorite modern mainstream radio rock band. OK Computer and Amnesiac are excellent too. I actually like all of their albums. I even have a soft spot for Pablo Honey, Creep is awful but the album has quite a few great and well-composed rock songs with melodic character. Even though it's probably their worst album I think that it would have been more respected if it was made by some britpop band who broke up right after its release.

There probably wasn't an album I listened to more in 1995 and 1996. And yes, it's an amazing album. They probably could have had a solid career just doing variations on this album. It is a must-have 90s classic. However...

In 1997, I was working at a summer camp in North Carolina. I had gone to the local mall on my day off and they had OK Computer in one of those listening kiosks. I remember thinking, "Oh, Radiohead has a new album out. Wonder if it's any good." Up to that point, Radiohead was just a band who'd released a so-so debut and a stellar follow-up. I think it was an open question whether they'd be able to repeat the success of The Bends. And listening to that new album there in the mall was a "holy shit" moment. I could not believe how good this album was and how different it sounded, both from their previous work, but also from everything else out at that moment.

I think OK Computer is their master work. For me, it best captures the anxiety that Thom Yorke was feeling at that time in his life. If you've never seen the tour documentary Meeting People Is Easy, watch it and you'll see what I mean. While The Bends is amazing in its own right, it was a straightforward rock album. There were plenty of people doing what they were doing, even if none did it better. But OK Computer is a singular accomplishment. Even Radiohead has never matched it.

There's always gonna people like that, but I've always known people who prefer the Bends. And considering how much I love The Bends it's hard to argue with. Planet Telex is still one of the best parts of their live show.

Picking a favorite Radiohead album is really no different than picking a favorite Dylan album. There's a lot of really good options that are all worthy of that status.

The Bends is an amazing album from cover to ending, and has many of my favorite RH songs. My Iron Lung was, in fact, the first song that actually got me interested into these guys after listening to their EP, and it was at that point that I started looking at these guys, being The Bends the album that opened me to this band. And it is amazing.

This album is amazing, but it is unfortunately overshadowed by two collossus coming afterwards. It doesn't mean any less from The Bends, but I simply like OKC more, and Kid A goes to a whole other level. Not because of the "experimental approach" or any of the sort, but because it drives me to different worlds and feelings with much more ease than TB. And isn't that what art is all about, evoking emotions?

The thing is: you may like The Bends more, and I may like Kid A more. Unless one of the two likes their respective album more just to be "cooler", "more hipster" or more "fuck y'all", then both are valid opinions. Actually, they both rank 88/100 in this web, and OKC ranks 91/100 which is, in my opinion, not that higher.

The Bends in my opinion is the best Radiohead album. A lot of people will say "OK Computer!", "Kid A!", or "In Rainbows!", but It's always been The Bends for me.

You're not alone. Look at me. The Bends is #1 on my list, and I named my username after a song on it. Experimental music does not equal better music. Of course Kid A and OK Computer are incredible as well, but from beginning-to-end, I agree The Bends is their best. The Bends is one of the few albums I've ever listened to where every single song got better with time, including the subtle, but beautiful Bulletproof and Sulk. Their next two albums come close to that. But on both albums, there are some tracks that never clicked with me, no matter how many times I listened to them. OK Computer, especially, which I consider 3rd after Kid A, I never really got into any song on the whole second half. Those songs were somewhere between okay and good, but they don't come anywhere close to any song from Airbag to Karma Police. Anyway, The Bends is the best, still mind-blowing after so many years and countless listens.

it's just a shitty mashup of Radio-Aktivitat and half of Brian Eno's catalog, yeah

ranking Radiohead albums is to music forums as citing Foucault is to academic writing, so instead, i present my 0% error list of douchiest favorite Radiohead album to have, from douchiest to least douchey

In Rainbows (what a groundbreaking distribution model)
Amnesiac (i'm more of an Amnesiac man myself)
Hail to the Thief (it's soooo political)
Kid A (on par with Stockhausen in its expansiveness)
The King of Limbs (sure, i thought this was only part one of a planned two-part album, but now that i've spent over 75 hours of my life forcing myself to like it, i look really cool on the Internet)
The Bends (i'm not into most britpop, but these lads...)
OK Computer (god i need a rich guy to tell me why capitalism is bad)

Pablo Honey (i do not recognize Thom Yorke's face, and i bought this in the early '90s when "I'm a Weirdo" was on the radio a lot. i am a well-adjusted human)
"Actually, my favorite Radiohead album is The Bends. I know, I know, it wasn't as experimental, but the songwriting was just top-notch, y'know?" god it irks me. like just say it as if it's a normal opinion. everyone likes the bends.

i'm not saying your post sounded like that, ofc, i'm just saying that everyone in real life who has ever said the bends is their fav album (which just keeps happening more and more, like i said) theyre like pseudo-snotty/2cool4u about it.

That's pretty interesting, I haven't come across that. I know The Bends was pretty well known but I just feel its often overlooked when compared to their other works. Though the whole discography is great, so whatever floats your boat.

Kid A isn't particularly experimental. Takes influence from a ton of 90s electronic artists and its almost like they just plug this influence into their older sound.

But yeah, Kid A is still really, really great and also my favourite.
